keep contacts in groups

This contact functionality is random. I put contacts into a group only to
discover later that 7 out of 13 were randomly removed later?

I like this product. The interaction with the online client is excellent.
The Live series is good but contacts in mail has to be bullet-proof."

What do I have to check to keep a contact in a group?

Re: keep contacts in groups

I was having a similar problem. ( I'm a user of Live Mail, not an MVP nor do
I work on it.)

I found that I was only having problems on computers that were XP and had
previously used Outlook Express. When I look at IE7, at Tool | Options |
Programs | Contact List, I saw that Microsoft Outlook was selected. On
computers where the groups were working, nothing was selected in that box.
Weird, because there is no way to select nothing, no <none> option so I
don't know how it gets into that state.

I changed it to Address book, and removed outlook express from my
installation. (Remove Programs |Windows
Components, etc.)

I don't even see this option in IE on Vista. Either it is no longer needed,
or it is someplace else I haven't looked. And if you are using Vista, then
you never had Outlook Express working previously.

Hope that helps,

Francis Langlois [MSFT]

Re: keep contacts in groups

Hi Francis. I posted some time ago now about this phenomenon of a
blank selection in XP's IE7 Contact List option
(news:uSKC09LKIHA.280@xxxxxx). It should still be on the
server to read (there's screenshots), but just in case, here is what I
posted:

I just discovered that WLMail *is* set as the default for 'Contacts'.
In the registry, the 'Default' value is 'Windows Live Mail' at the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Contacts
However, that name is not displayed in IE7 because the 'Default' value
is not set at the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Contacts\Windows Live Mail
Thus, to have 'Windows Live Mail' displayed in the 'Internet programs'
options (in XP), change the latter default value (after backing it up) to
'Windows Live Mail'

Re: keep contacts in groups

Thanks Peter.R. This is excellent information. Do you know if it solves the
problem of the individual address migrating out of the groups as Nigel
Tufnell described?

On XP, what should the setting be in order for Live Mail to be the default
for everything?

On Vista?

BTW, do you know where this is set in Vista? I don't see the same screens in
Vista IE 7 for setting default programs.

Re: keep contacts in groups

Looks like another reason for me to avoid upgrading to Vista for the time
being.

Can't wait to try this.

Re: keep contacts in groups

Francis,
In Vista:
Click on the Orb, in the search dialog box enter the word "default" omitting
the quotes. Click on the Default Programs.
or
Access the Default Programs via the Start Menu or Control Panel
- for it to appear on the StartMenu the option needs to be toggled on(right
click orb/properties/startmenu/customize)

Click on Set Default Programs.
Scroll to Windows Live Mail or Windows Live Mail(News) to set the defaults.

Re: keep contacts in groups

You're welcome Francis. I haven't experienced that problem before, nor
do I recall it being addressed before in this newsgroup, so I don't know.
I have noticed on my XP system that Outlook occasionally steals some of
the the defaults set in: Internet Options->Programs [tab]. In fact,
earlier today I noticed it had done it again, even though I have unchecked
the option: "Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and
Calendar" at Tools->Options...->Other [tab] in Outlook. I don't use
Outlook on my Vista system though. Actually, it probably happened when I
did an uninstall/reinstall of Windows Live Mail.
In XP, apart from making WLMail the default Mail and News handler at
WLMail's Tools->options...->General [tab], I also set the default programs
through: Start->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab] (the
'blank' selection for "Contact list" being Windows Live Mail). However, I
then go to: Start->Set Program Access and Defaults->Custom, and check
"Windows Live Mail" under "Choose a default e-mail program :"
In Vista, apart from making WLMail the default Mail and News handler
at WLMail's Tools->options...->General [tab], I also set all its defaults
through: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set
programs [button]->Set your default programs->Windows Live Mail, and
Windows Live Mail (news). I follow that up by going to: Start Orb->Control
Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set
program access and computer defaults->Custom, and check "Windows Live
Mail" under "Choose a default e-mail program :" I found the latter option
also necessary to ensure WLMail was set as default in in *all* relevant
parts of the registry.
