I did not post Q on newsgroup as I am new to discussion groups and finding it very helpfull. On windows XP IE7 Programs / email, you are alowed to select a windows live mail so you can replay to web sites emails all i'm wondering is why has windows vista lost this option? "N. | | Re: IE7 Email Program Good Q, I'm not sure, when i've found that when i installed it in the past i had so much trouble with it on vista it was better just to use it as a web site sign in. (i uninstalled it.) and since my pc has come back from a repair (differant story) i have never installed it since. But having said that i must be part of vista? because i have just found out that i can set windows live mail in the following menu. Start, Rt mouse click, Properties, 'Start Menu' Customize, E-Mail link, windows live mail instead of windows mail. (it maybe just a link to web site?) So that it shows it in the start menu, so now i don't need to have it set as favorits. I know what your trying to say, but on my other pc's that all run windows XP i have not installed it and i still can set the option to use live mail instead of default outlook express in the internet options, program, e-mail settings. So that if i need to email an address on a web site it loads up live email alows me to sign in and even put's the address i'm emailing into the 'To' box with no problem. This is one reason why i haven't upgraded the other pc's to vista, other wise i like vista on my new pc and only have miner prob's as you can see. If the OP has installed Windows Live Mail, it too should be a default Mail Client option. | | Re: IE7 Email Program Vista includes Windows Mail(WM). It does not include Windows Live Mail. If WLM was present, it was installed independent of Vista. If still present in the StartMenu/Customize/Email option then: a. a registry value was left over after uninstall via Programs and Features(Vista's term for XP and earlier Add Remove) b. not uninstalled One other possibility, in some cases Windows Live Hotmail may be misnamed in the registry as Windows Live Mail -- ...winston ms-mvp windows live mail "Sparky Pete." <SparkyPete@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:0B6A1E18-90E2-4483-A88D-9AE25D4DD25D@xxxxxx Good Q, I'm not sure, when i've found that when i installed it in the past i had so much trouble with it on vista it was better just to use it as a web site sign in. There are several confusing issues here. the biggest confusion is that there are two versions of Windows Live mail - an on-line version and a local version. | | Re: IE7 Email Program Well Sparky Pete, you have just pointed us to a bug in Vista, that Windows Live Mail (the client) should probably address, as well as Vista SP1. For starters, what was formerly called "Hotmail", then "Windows Live Mail", is now called "Windows Live Hotmail". So all references in XP and Vista that indicated "Windows Live Mail" for Windows Live Hotmail, should be renamed to "Windows Live Hotmail". Secondly, when Hotmail was again renamed to "Windows Live Hotmail", the beta mail client "Windows Live Mail Desktop" was renamed to "Windows Live Mail". The mail client Windows Live Mail is now out of beta, and can be installed on XP or Vista from the link Gordon supplied (http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview). Now, there was indeed an option through 'Internet programs' (Start->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Internet Programs [section]->E-mail in XP to set "Windows Live Mail", which was really Windows Live Hotmail, as the default E-mail program for Internet Services. There was also an option to set "Windows Live Mail", which was really for Windows Live Hotmail, as the Start Menu E-mail icon/link (right-click Start button->Properties->Start Menu [tab]->check "Start menu"->Customize [button]->General [tab]->Show on Start menu [section]->E-mail . However, after installing the latest version of the mail client Windows Live Mail (12.0.1606) on XP, those "Windows Live Mail" options that were really for Windows Live Hotmail, have I believe, been changed to "Windows Live Hotmail", with the addition of "Windows Live Mail" as an option for the installed mail client. However, with Vista, those "Internet Programs" options do not exist in Internet Options, there being a button called "Set programs" instead, which opens up the "Default Programs" dialog box, available also through the Start Menu and Control Panel. Indeed, there are no options there to make Windows Live Hotmail a default program. However Sparky Pete, you did find that there is an option to set "Windows Live Mail", which is really for Windows Live Hotmail, as the Start Menu E-mail icon/link (right-click Start Orb button->Properties->Start Menu [tab]->check "Start menu"->Customize [button]->General [tab]->Show on Start menu [section]->E-mail link . Selecting "Windows Live Mail" there will also affect the Send To->Mail Recipient right-click context menu item, and the E-mail button in Adobe Reader, Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Live Photo Gallery, which effectively makes Windows Live Hotmail the default mail program on a Vista system except that it does not affect any "mailto:" links in web pages etc.Interestingly, when Windows Live Mail (the client) is installed on a Vista System, the selected option for the Start Menu E-mail icon/link (right-click Start Orb button->Properties->Start Menu [tab]->check "Start menu"->Customize [button]->General [tab]->Show on Start menu [section]->E-mail link becomes a blank setting, but once another option in the list (Windows Live Mail (Hotmail), or Windows Mail) is selected, there is no item in the list (blank or otherwise) to return it to Windows Live Mail (the client). So that is a bug the developers of Windows Live Mail (the client) need to address.-- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Sparky Pete." <SparkyPete@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:0B6A1E18-90E2-4483-A88D-9AE25D4DD25D@xxxxxx Quote: > Good Q, > I'm not sure, when i've found that when i installed it in the past i had so > much trouble with it on vista it was better just to use it as a web site sign > in. Mail Client option could be that you used the Windows Live "all-in-one" installer to download/install one or more other Windows Live applications (e.g., Windows Live Toolbar; Windows Live Messenger). Furthermore, since the Windows Live Hotmail page opens when you click on a MailTo link when Windows Live Mail is the default, one might presume it's default behavior if Windows Live Mail isn't actually installed. | | Re: IE7 Email Program Neither, since the message window in WLMail, and the web interface for Microsoft Communities wraps the lines quite effectively. It's a choice Gordon. I would rather use Quoted Printable than Base 64, but there is a bug in WLMail that forces line wrapping of QP Plain Text when it shouldn't. There is no mandate within this newsgroup to wrap lines, and I prefer not to when I give long replies which I have saved to drafts several times and edited. It is way too frustrating for me editing a draft message when it has been line wrapped. For this post though, I have selected QP, so the lines will be wrapped due to the bug I mentioned. -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Gordon" <gbplinux@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:fnno9s$k7q$1@xxxxxx Quote: > "Peter.R" <Peter.R@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:ut%23TMypYIHA.4272@xxxxxx Quote: Quote: >> Well Sparky Pete, you have just pointed us to a bug in Vista, that >> Windows Live Mail (the client) should probably address, as well as >> Vista SP1. > If that's an example of posting by Windows Live Mail then either it's > got a problem or you need to fix the line wrap. > > I think MS have shot themselves in the foot with these names, even more > so than the confusion that exists between outlook express and outlook! |
