Problem moving messages

As part of my annual computer housekeeping, I go into OE (in the past) or
WLM (now) and move all the previous years messages from my inbox to a folder
called Saved Inbox/2007. Now when I try to select (click on first one,
shift/click on the last one) approximately 2500 messages from the Inbox and
try to drag them to the Saved Inbox/2007 folder, I get an error message
about "Unknown error has occurred" and then another dialogue box saying
"Selected message(s) could not be moved."

Then, after that has happened, I am no longer able to Preview any of the
selected messages. This is bad news as I need to reference some of those
old messages.

Any clues? Would I be better off just clicking and dragging in the Store
Folder? Then I think I would have a problem with the dates involved.

TIA,

Tom

Re: Problem moving messages

Hi Tom.

You shouldn't move files about in the Message Store, as it messes with the database indexing.

Are you saying you are unable to open some e-mails now and get an error message when you try?

Re: Problem moving messages

Peter R.

Wow! That other email you linked had a lot of great info in it. I think the
delayed indexing was the source of the problem. I didn’t give it enough time
to complete (hours?) and probably interrupted the process too soon. You
would think that they might put in a warning to advise you not to move
anything until the background indexing is complete.

But, before I take those drastic steps you outlined in the email to Jon, I
would like to make sure my data are valid.

Here is one problem in the Sent Items folder (and I have two, one under
Tom's Email and another under Storage Folder). In both Sent Items, most of
the messages don't have the correct name in the TO: field. It has my name
and email address in there. So, when I look at the Sent Items, I can't see
easily who it was sent to. If I click on the message (or open), I can see
who it was sent to but that takes a long time to find a particular message.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Problem moving messages

Peter,
Your response below prompts another question. I opened the link, found the
info useful and wanted to save it to one of my storage folders. I clicked
File/Save as and got a save dialog with the file name "Re_ Message Opening
Problem.eml". I navigated to the storage folder I wanted and clicked save.
The message was saved to the storage folder but doesn't show when I go to
that folder, I assume because it was saved with
a "real" name and not an alfanumeric.eml. Is there another way to
retrieve and save the message so it will show in my storage folder?

In the File menu, there should be an option to 'Copy to folder'. Use that

Re: Problem moving messages

No 'copy to folder' in File menu, but right click in the message and there
is a 'copy to folder' choice. Used that and it worked.
Thanks

Re: Problem moving messages

Yes, I have noticed that the To: field can contain the wrong name (with an e-mail address in angled brackets) after a message is 'recovered'. I do know of a workaround that fixes the problem, but the 'Account' column information is lost (if it hasn't been already). It is basically an export/import of those messages, followed by deletion of the old bodgie ones.

You can use the File->Export/Import->Messages... option to do this, but another way is to drag the messages to your Desktop or a folder in Windows Explorer, then drag them back onto the WLMail interface. If you don't want to delete your old messages before dragging the 'exported' ones back into their WLMail folder, then mark your old messages as 'unread' first to help distinguish them from the imported ones.
