File, Send doesn't work

Using OutLook Express as my default email, I could hit File, Send in Word or
Windows Explorer to automatically send a document as an email attachment
through OutLook Express. Now that I've upgraded to Windows Live Mail
Desktop, I get an error message saying I have to log into Microsoft Exchange
Address Book. Is there any way I can Use File, Send the way I used to?

Re: File, Send doesn't work

I think you meant Internet Explorer, not Windows Explorer...
and if you're using the old WLM "Desktop", you need to upgrade to the newest
version, 12.0.1606

It should work, if WLM has all the default mail protocols.
Go to Start - Default Programs - set your default programs

I have Outlook 2003, but have Thunderbird set as my default email program.
In Word 2003, if I click on File - Send to - Mail Recipient, it opens an
Outlook email toolbar.
If I click on File - Send to - Mail Recipient (as attachment), it opens a
Thunderbird compose window.

In IE7, when I click on File - Send - Link by Email, it opens a Thunderbird
compose window.

Re: File, Send doesn't work

Thanks Dave. The defaults were the issue. Both Live Mail, and Outlook
thought they were the default mail handler. What I had to do was go into
Outlook and uncheck the default settings. Apparently Live Mail doesn't do
that automatically when it become the default mail handler, and least not for
Word 2003.

"Send to mail recipient" is taken over by Windows Live Mail

I believe I have a similar problem I can not find the solution to... I use
Outlook as my default mail. Since I installed Windows Live Mail it is not
possible to use the Windows Explorer "send to mail recipient" with Outlook,
since I now always end up with the file being forwarded via WLM instead. I
have already chosen Outlook as my default mail in Internet
Explorer/Settings/Programs and in WLM I have chosen the setting "this (WLM)
is NOT the default email program".

So what makes WLM "take over" the default email designation from Outlook,
and where can I change back - as i understand, my other option now is to
uninstall WLM and use Outlook Express instead...

Re: "Send to mail recipient" is taken over by Windows Live Mail

You've mentioned OE later in the thread, thus it is assumed XP is your o/s.

WLM does not have an option to 'uncheck' itself as default. It only has an option to Make Default and found on the Tools\Options\General Tab
- Did you click on this item ?

I.e. --> When OL is the default client, WLM should look like the above.

You might try this..
Close WLM
Open Outlook
Tools/Options/Other/
- check the item 'Make Outlook the default program ...'
Note: if checked, uncheck, click Apply, check again, click Apply
Close OL
Restart

Question(after following the above steps)....
Open Windows Explorer\Tools\Folder Options
Scroll to the file type URL:Mailto Protocol
- Which program is associated with that file type ?

Re: "Send to mail recipient" is taken over by Windows Live Mail

Hi Winston - thks for your reply,

yes XP is my o/s.

In Windows Live Mail Tools/Options the text reads (translated from Swedish)
"this program is NOT the standard email program"

In Outlook, Tools/Options/Other/ the item 'Make Outlook the default program
....' is in fact checked, but the check-box is greyed-out so I am not able to
change it...

In Windows Explorer\Tools\Folder Options, the file type URL:Mailto Protocol
is not associated to any file type, it states [None]

What can be done?

Re: "Send to mail recipient" is taken over by Windows Live Mail

<repost>

Try reinstalling the latest updates for Outlook? <eg>
(Many users complain that Outlook then overrides
their non-Outlook default.)

However, FWIW (I have never used Outlook) my guess
is that you could be seeing the same problem I found between
OE and WLMail. OE only checks HKLM while WLMail
overrides that using HKCU.

I posted about that a while ago...

If that doesn't help execute the following command pipeline
(in a cmd window):

ftype | find /i "mail"

and post the results.

Re: "Send to mail recipient" is taken over by Windows Live Mail

After using Regedit and changing HKEY_Current_User/Software/Clients/Mail from
Windows Live Mail to Microsoft Outlook, the problem seems to be solved.

Now, when I use Send to mail recipient via right mouse-click from a file on
the Desktop (or some other files using File Explorer), the file is appended
to an Outlook New mail as it should, instead of being appended to a Windows
Live Messenger New mail.

so thks, and I assume this will be corrected in a future release of some sort.

Don't feel comfortable fooling with registry. Did anyone find a solution to
the problem withouth editing the registry? TIA
