Actually what he was trying was almost correct, at least for OE:

nntp://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop/uZjRW5LbIHA.1204@xxxxxx

Note, however, that this is incorrect according to the RFC [Ref#1]
E.g. any other newsreader which supports the NNTP URL
might be expecting to see it coded this way:

nntp://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop/151702

after taking note of that Message-ID's Xref: header when downloaded from that server:

Xref: TK2MSFTNGP01.phx.gbl microsoft.public.outlook:608994 microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop:151702

So, which form does WLMail like anyway... Let's Run...

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe"
/newsurl:nntp://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop/151702

Not that one.

BTW here's why and it also explains why including a Message-ID's angle brackets
won't work:

<netcap>
ARTICLE <151702>
430 no such article found
</netcap>

Next try

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe"
/newsurl:nntp://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop/uZjRW5LbIHA.1204@xxxxxx

Yes. OE's mistake repeated.

Here's what that generates:

<netcap>
ARTICLE <uZjRW5LbIHA.1204@xxxxxx>
220 0 article <uZjRW5LbIHA.1204@xxxxxx>
</netcap>

Ref#1: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1738.html

(Live Search for
NNTP gopher URI intitle:RFC
)

<quote>
3.7. NNTP

The nntp URL scheme is an alternative method of referencing news
articles, useful for specifying news articles from NNTP servers (RFC
977).

A nntp URL take the form:

nntp://<host>:<port>/<newsgroup-name>/<article-number>

where <host> and <port> are as described in Section 3.1. If :<port>
is omitted, the port defaults to 119.

The <newsgroup-name> is the name of the group, while the <article-
number> is the numeric id of the article within that newsgroup.

Note that while nntp: URLs specify a unique location for the article
resource, most NNTP servers currently on the Internet today are
configured only to allow access from local clients, and thus nntp
URLs do not designate globally accessible resources. Thus, the news:
form of URL is preferred as a way of identifying news articles.
</quote>

Looking at how those angle brackets are being added by WLMail
now I'm beginning to wonder if the programmer just didn't realize
that the ones given above are merely metacharacters to denote
the placeholders? E.g. if they weren't added it looks as if WLMail
(and probably OE too) would support the correct (message number) syntax
as well as providing the (nonstandard) feature of accessing posts
by Message-Id (via the NNTP URL), as the poster was trying to do.

FYI
