Windows Mail Not Recognised As Installed

Hello,

Ok so i have been using windows vista for a few months now, and yes have had
to reinstall it at least a few times due to third party software
compatibilty issues. I now have an issue that I am not sure how it occured
or where to resolve it. Windows Vista obviously comes with the windows live
folder as a default with a web link in it to the site to download the items
you would like. For some time now though I have been trying to get the
system to recognise that Windows Live Mail Desktop is installed and to make
it the default however through the defaults section it still registers the
web address to go to as if logging in through a browser and not an email
client. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Foxy Sean

Re: Windows Mail Not Recognised As Installed

Firstly, Microsoft Outlook can silently steal some of the the e-mail defaults when you open it, so if you have Outlook installed, uncheck the option: "Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar" at Tools->Options...->Other [tab] in Outlook.

In Vista, apart from making WLMail the default Mail and News handler at WLMail's Tools->options...->General [tab], also set all its defaults through: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set your default programs->Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live Mail (news).

Also, follow that up by going to: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set program access and computer defaults->Custom, and check "Windows Live Mail" under "Choose a default e-mail program :" I found the latter option also necessary to ensure WLMail is set as default in in *all* relevant parts of the registry.

Re: Windows Mail Not Recognised As Installed

Hello,

Peter thanks for the tips. I changed it to the default in every place i
could find however it still does the same. In fact as a curious oddity after
me doing thatwhen i went to reply to your message on here it now goes to
open a web page. Am beginning to think that maybe i should just restart
everything again and the go from there.

Thanks,

Foxy Sean

Re: Windows Mail Not Recognised As Installed

Well, since you are using Windows Mail for newsgroups, you might want to have it set as your default news handler. So what web page are you talking about that keeps opening up?

See this post also: news:eQYTu4LbIHA.484@xxxxxx which refers to another place to set defaults.

A repair install of Windows Live Mail might help also.

Re: Windows Mail Not Recognised As Installed

That may just be the only thing i can do. And its a blank IE page its
opening. The only way i can describe it is if you attempt to use the windows
live links in vista prorams folders from the orb before installing windows
live mail desktop.
I have however hit another snag with Vista so a full system restart, i.e os
reinstall , will hopefully then fix both issues shouldnt it. Ah well Vista
was always going to be an adventure and as the bugs calm down to the regular
ones guess we will just have to put up with some of it.

Thanks,

Sean

Re: Windows Mail Not Recognised As Installed

Good luck with it. Vista SP1 will be out in a few weeks. Look forward to that.
