Windows Mail on Vista v OE on XP SP2

My desktop is running Vista Ultimate while my laptop is XP SP2.

A few days ago some newsgroups that I subscribe to in Windows Mail started
showing only posts and replies from (I think) only ppl in my contacts list
(which are other MSMVPs). When I compare Windows Mail Newsgroups with that
of OE the posts listings are different.

It seems that Windows Live Mail newsgroups is only downloading posts that
have been replied to by ppl in my contact list. I do see some original posts
from the public.

I have been through all of the settings and cannot see a reason.

Perhaps it has something to do with my junk email blocked domains list? That
would explain why I am seeing some public posts and only the replies from
ppl in my contacts.

Any thoughts?

What level is your safe list option set to? By default it should be medium
however if you've set it to restrictive/Safe list only then you may see what
you're seeing.
You can get to this from Tools/Safety Options

Re: Windows Mail on Vista v OE on XP SP2

Hi Colin,

I fixed it by opening the Safe options. I found microsoft.com in the blocked
domains list. Last thing last night I closed Windows mail and when I
restarted it this morning it was back to normal (had to close and re-open
for changes to blocked domains to take effect).

I don't know how microsoft.com got into my blocked domains list (accidental
or malware, not likely, Vista Ultimate).

Wish - Future versions of Windows Mail may like to disregard or prompt when
certain domains are added to the blocked domains list.

Thanks for your help. As always it was difficult to fully describe the
problem I was having but you expertise is appreciated.

Regards.

Re: Windows Mail on Vista v OE on XP SP2

It's not terribly certain which application you're referring to - Windows
Mail or Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail has long lists of unallowable
domains and unblockable addresses at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live
Mail\PerPassportSettings\<passportID>\HTTP\Http Unallowable Domain and round
about there. "Unallowable" in this respect can surely only mean "You're not
allowed to block these domains" - unless anyone has a better idea. I didn't
bother to check whether microsoft.com was on any of these lists.

Re: Windows Mail on Vista v OE on XP SP2

Hi Iidhund,

Windows Live Mail. Thx for the registry keys. I may put a watch on them in
case something is hijacking microsoft.com.

It has been quite an inconvenience as I have not been able to view posts on
the newsgroups and reply to questions (that I can't see) to claim my
doughnuts from MS.

Regards.

That might be a clue for diagnosing a symptom that I had
(except in my case my contact list is empty. <w>)
I added an E-mail account (for a Live Hotmail account)
which was not connecting. (I'm not sure if it is supposed to work.)
Anyway, the failure of that account seemed to drastically affect
the results of Synchronize All which I use for downloading newsgroup posts.
FWIW deleting the E-mail account fixed this symptom (and fixed
some other UI annoyances too.)

So, how many accounts do you have defined and what type are they?

I think it's more important to *imagine* a reason and test that idea
as a hypothesis. (See above.) <eg>

Re: Windows Mail on Vista v OE on XP SP2

Hi Rob,

I removed the blocked senders domains only (microsoft.com, yahoo.com,
tiscali.com) and all is fine now.
Some spam had trickled into my hotmail inbox and I had used the Add Senders
Domain to Blocked list context menu.

My view of the IE newsgroup only showed posts made by users with a non ms or
yahoo domain and replies from Bear and Leonard Grey. I thought at first I
was being shoved out of the newsgroup. Ha.

Regards.

Re: Windows Mail on Vista v OE on XP SP2

It is interesting that at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\PerPassportSettings\<passportID>\HTTP\Http my "Http Unallowable Domain" and my " Http Unblockable Domain" lists are basically the same, with both containing hotmail.com at the sub-key "00000000".

I would have thought that unallowable meant the opposite to unblockable.
