Can't move folders from one account to another

I created fodlers under one account and want to move them to another account.
It does not seem to be possible.

Re: Can't move folders from one account to another

Hi, TW Biggy.

Are you using WinXP or Vista? WLM works in both operating systems, but
their User Account structures are quite different, so it might be very
important to know which one you are dealing with.

Re: Can't move folders from one account to another

It depends what sort of account the folders are created under. POP account
folders you can move around as you like, but HTTP (Hotmail etc) folders you
can't, because they have to be mirrored on the server. You can always create
a new folder with the same name under another account and then move the
contents of the old one to it. There used to be problems with creating
folders in HTTP accounts in WLMail and it seemed best to create them on the
web and let them get synchronized to WLMail rather than the other way
around. This may have been fixed; I haven't tried. I don't have any IMAP
accounts, but I suspect the same applies to IMAP folders as to HTTP. Someone
will be along to protest if I'm wrong.

Re: Can't move folders from one account to another

Sorry, TW: I seem to have misled you. My folder structure has been more or
less constant since way before this program went gold last Autumn, so I
haven't had to move any. I now find that I can't, although I'm fairly sure I
used to be able to. I use XPSP2, too.

So, it looks like you're stuck with creating a new folder, moving the
contents of the old one to the new one and then deleting the old one. In my
experience, it's not a good idea to move too many messages at a time -
WLMail has a tendency to choke if you do. Stick to bunches of say 50.

You can set up folders within folders under POP accounts, but not HTTP ones.

If anyone else *can* move folders from one account to another, it would be
good to hear how it's done.

Re: Can't move folders from one account to another

Be aware that deleting a folder within a POP account causes the Quick views to break in the current version of Windows Live Mail (12.0.1606).

As for moving POP account folders about, it is possible to move user created folders to another folder within an account, but not to a folder outside it or to another account. The problem is that the location of a moved folder is not changed within the Message Store. Rather, the location of a moved folder is changed only in the database.

For example, in the WLMail interface under "Storage folders", if I moved the sub-folders from within my "Imported items" folder, then deleted the empty "Imported items" folder. I would still find that the "Imported items" folder with all those sub-folders are still in the Message Store just as if I had not moved or deleted anything. Everything still works, but the Message Store becomes confusing and messy. And I am not sure where such folders would end up after a full recovery of the database (probably back within the "Imported items" folder).

Similar problems would occur when moving folders between accounts (if it was possible). What would happen if an account was deleted after moving its folders to another account, given that those folders are still in their original location in the Message Store? That account folder would have to remain in the Message Store so as not to delete those 'moved' folders.
