WLM using 50% cpu

Vista Home premium. Windows Mail takeing ages to start and always creaqtes
new "Recovered Messages" foolders every time started. Forum recommended
installing WLM which would import from Windows Mail. I cleaned up Windows
Mail first, no recovered messages or deleted items. CLosed WM and installed
WLM. WLM imported contacts and settings OK, then Inbox and drafts. It
imported 515 of 515 Sent Items, but bar graph not quite completed and this
window stayed on scrfreem. WLM then used >50% cpu, with HDD light hard on,
for the next hour until I forced a shutdown. After reboot I started WLM and
it again took >50% cpu and HDD light for 20 minutes, and still had no icon on
task bar, just the first splash screen. I uninstalled WLM, rebooted and
reinstalled. As soon as I started WLM it took >50% cpu and HDD and first
splash screen. It did not start up at all.
Back to WM and recovered messages problem. How do I completely remove WLM
so thatt I can start again? Obviously uninstall through Programs & Features
has still left something there.

Failing that, is there any good 3rd party email program that will import
from Windows Mail?

Re: WLM using 50% cpu

Well, the all inclusive method for a complete uninstall is listed below^^, but in your case, I suggest you import your Windows Mail messages and accounts manually after deleting only your existing "windows Live Mail" Message Store folder**. Windows Live Mail will recreate the Message Store upon next restart. All your Windows Mail settings and rules etc would have already been imported into Windows Live Mail's registry.

To export Windows Mail accounts: Tools->Accounts...->Export... [button]

To export Windows Mail messages: File->Export->Messages...->Microsoft Windows Mail

To import Windows Live Mail accounts: Tools->Accounts...->Import... [button]

To import Windows Live Mail messages: File->Import->Messages...->Windows Mail. You can simply "Browse..." to your Windows Mail Message Store folder (which should be found automatically) (may have to unhide, or adjust your permissions for, or take ownership of that Message Store first) or if you exported Windows Mail's messages, "Browse..." to that location.

^^Complete uninstall:

1. After backing up your messages & accounts through the export options, uninstall Windows Live Mail through Control Panel.

2. Now use Regedit (or your favourite registry editor) to delete the registry Keys (if they exist):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop

3. Now navigate to your WLMail Message Store folder** and rename it (so you can keep it as a backup - messages can be dragged from the message store to your WLMail interface as a method of importing them).

4. Go to the 'Windows Live Mail' 'Program Files' folder (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) and delete it.

5. Run Windows Live Beta Remover*** if necessary.

6. Reboot your computer.

7. Now install WLMail and import your accounts and messages****. It may be best to disable any antivirus program you are running while installing WLM and running it for the first time.

**To find the location of your message store, go Tools->Options...->Advanced [tab]->Maintenance->Store Folder (the default location is a hidden folder). If you have moved your Storage Folder from its default location, you should also delete the old Storage Folder which remains in the default location -

Vista: %localappdata%\microsoft\windows live mail
(C:\Users\<Windows user account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

XP: %userprofile%\local settings\application data\microsoft\windows live mail
(C:\Documents and Settings\<windows user account>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

If any extra spellchecking languages have been installed, or you want to re-use your custom dictionary (it can be opened with a text editor), then the contents of the "Proof" folder (within the default location Storage Folder) should be moved somewhere else ready to be moved back after the reinstall.

***The Windows Live Beta Remover may also be helpful if you have installed Windows Live beta programs previously.
See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940065
Download:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eta-remove.zip Windows Live Beta Remover removes all the old beta installers.

****Note that because the registry key is deleted, messages, accounts, and message rules will be imported again from Outlook Express/Windows Mail, so if you do not want this to happen, first delete them from those redundant mail clients.
