Send/Receive from Windows Live Mail Desktop version

    Hi everyone

I'm new to the forum and hope someone is able to help me. I've read through 8 pages of threads to see if I can find a similar problem, but no luck as yet.

I'm using Vista Home Premium 64 bit (first vista machine), which came preinstalled on a HP Laptop. I'm considering switching from googlemail/igoogle to Windows Live, partly because I've read it integrates well with vista. Any comments regarding this would be useful, although the main reason for my posting is as follows :

I've signed up to windows live, and downloaded windows live mail, along with a few other windows live programs to see what theyre like.

My understanding is that the windows live download is self configuring, in that it sets the pop3 and smtp settings for you. This, it appears has been done. The problem is, when I click send/receive I'm getting the following error :

"Unable to send or receive messages for the pop3.live.com account. The connection to the server has failed"

    Server : pop3.live.com
Windows Live Mail Error ID : 0x800CCC0E
    Protocol : pop3
    Port : 110
    Secure (SSL) : No
    Socket Error : 10060

I've checked, and my username and password are correct, the pop settings were automatically done, so i'm a little confused.

Any help would be appreciated. Apologies if this goes on a bit, but /i kind of thought the more info /i gave, the better ?

    Many thanks

    Hi Bryan,
Windows Live Mail does not configure your gmail account automatically. Try

When I recently added my live.com email address to WLM,
it auto-configured that account as a HTTP type.
I don't understand why yours would be configured as a
POP account. AFAIK, live.com does not currently feature
POP accounts, although that has been promised for the future.

Re: Send/Receive from Windows Live Mail Desktop version

    Let's back up a bit..
Windows Live Mail will configure a pop3 account for Yahoo and Gmail only if the
    a. Yahoo Plus in the U.S. is intact($20/yr)
    - other countries may offer it for free but it may require manual configuration
    b. Gmail needs to have Pop3 enabled via Gmail web interface(logon and configure in the options)

Your post shows the use of pop3.live.com
    a. The live.com server is restricted to use for Legacy pop3 msn.com accounts and Windows Live Plus Hotmail account(msn.com,
    live.com, hotmail.com @ $20/yr)
    b. If you have one of these accounts and wish to use pop3,you will have to configure it manually since WLM will interpret these
    accounts as an http account.
    - A Windows Live Hotmail Plus account will function as an http account, but you won't have pop3 capabilities(leave on
    server, rules etc)
    - to configure a Plus account, when entering the email address enter it of the form username@xxxxxx, set the account up,
    then modify it..
Here is a link with the complete settings
    http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com...90CA!143.entry

All other pop3 accounts must be configured manually.

Re: Send/Receive from Windows Live Mail Desktop version

    Thanks for all the replies.

There's a couple of things I think are getting confused.

I posted my message here using my googlemail email address, I have a live.co.uk email account, which is what I'm trying to set up with desktop live mail.

I am considering redirecting my googlemail to live, but not yet decided.

From what I guess, the Live Mail has set itself up incorrectly ?? In that it should be http, rather than pop3 ?

If this is the case, would I not be able to leave copies of messages on the web version ? I'm a little more confused than I was before because I honestly thought that my windows Live mail (live.co.uk) account was pop3

    Anyone ?

Many thanks again for the responses...

That's right. If you're signed in to WLMail with your live.co.uk Live ID,
the "Add an e-mail account" wizard should detect the type of account and set
it up for you automatically as an HTTP account.

With an HTTP account, what you see if you log in to your account on the web
will be mirrored exactly in WLMail by the synchronization process. If you
ever want to save a message locally but delete it from the web version, you
have to move it to a folder under Storage folders.

    great.

    thanks for that Noel.

For some reason, when I downloaded and installed WLM, it appears to have wrongly set itself up as pop3......how odd...

OK i'll attempt to change it to http this evening, fingers crossed.

I should then have copies of my emails in my live account also in my WLM on my laptop, and they sync with each other, as you said, mirroring.

Don't suppose if anyone knows whether there's a windows Live calender that does a similar thing, in that it syncs with the web version ? Didnt see one when i downloaded WLM anywhere,......

    Thanks again

My pleasure. As regards the calendar, join the queue of millions who have
asked for this feature. In the meantime, have a look at
