| | Recovery of Windows Live Mail messages damaged with windows explor I made the mistake of moving my Windows Live Mail messages with Windows Explorer. Now those messages that were 'read' in Windows Live Mail can no longer be read in Windows Live Mail. Instead I am given an error 'message cannot be found' The message is viewable within Windows Explorer. Please can anyone advise me of the best way of recovering my mail messages. |

| | Re: Recovery of Windows Live Mail messages damaged with windows explor Can you explain a bit more on what 'moving' means ? Have you attempted to drag the *.eml files back into the WLM ? Windows email files are standard text files with an *.eml extension, can you read one in Notepad ? Did you move something else in addition to *.eml files ? -- ...winston ms-mvp windows live mail "Nick P" <Nick P@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:98565D88-8B1D-477F-A4A5-A19115103F22@xxxxxx Quote: > I made the mistake of moving my Windows Live Mail messages with Windows > Explorer. | | Re: Recovery of Windows Live Mail messages damaged with windows explorer I think what you mean is that you moved messages out of your Windows Live Mail Message Store, or into another folder within your Message Store. The problem with doing this is that the database still maintains record of the original location of the messages you moved, so you would still see them listed in the message list within WLMail. However, when you try to open them, you receive an error message because they no longer exist in that location. Despite the error message, you should still be able to delete that message from the message list. If you moved those messages to another folder in the Message Store, they would probably have been moved by WLMail to a sub-folder within the "Recovered items" folder under "Storage folders". If you moved them to a folder outside of the Message Store, you can drag them into a folder in the WLMail interface. -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Nick P" <Nick P@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:98565D88-8B1D-477F-A4A5-A19115103F22@xxxxxx Quote: > I made the mistake of moving my Windows Live Mail messages with Windows > Explorer. | | Re: Recovery of Windows Live Mail messages damaged with windows ex Peter, Winston, Many thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately I moved the emails external to WML using Windows Explorer but still within the Storage Folder. The email files are visible from within Windows but not from within WLM, other than the error message. From within Windows Explorer I can open the emails using Live Mail and also with Notepad. Somehow in the process of moving the e-mails I have also damaged the Contact List, any ideas? Many thanks - Nick "Peter.R" wrote: Quote: > I think what you mean is that you moved messages out of your Windows Live Mail Message Store, or into another folder within your Message Store. > > The problem with doing this is that the database still maintains record of the original location of the messages you moved, so you would still see them listed in the message list within WLMail. | | Re: Recovery of Windows Live Mail messages damaged with windows ex Winston, Many thanks for your reply. I clicked and dragged some of the e-mail folders using Windows Explorer but still within the Storage Folders. Yes I can still read the e-mails with Live Mail and Notepad. When I dragged the folders back into their original place, they did not re connect with WLM. | | Re: Recovery of Windows Live Mail messages damaged with windows ex Yes, I see. Delete the messages with the errors from within WLMail. As for the messages that you moved to another location within your WLMail Message Store that have not appeared in WLMail, *move* them out of the Message Store into another folder, such as a folder on your Desktop. Then drag them onto your WLMail interface. As for your corrupted contacts, What type of corruption occurred? -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Nick P" <NickP@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:7031A865-8AD6-4794-B839-C44C321BFB5A@xxxxxx Quote: > Peter, Winston, Many thanks for your quick response.
