Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Please can someone tell me how to download or use the United Kingdom British
spell check within Windows live mail or do I have to learn an American
language?

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Open spell.ini (in %programfiles%/Windows Live/Mail/Proof/prf0009/2) and
change lang=1033 to lang=2057. Simple in XP, but there may be permissions
problems in Vista that someone else will have to help you with.

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Thank You for that Noel. I have altered the ini file on vista( running as
administrator and file appeared to save ok) and now off to check. I was
wondering if I had to download a *.lex file for it to work correctly
I am running Vista and binned the 60 day version of office which I presume
would have had a lex file.

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Thanks Noel but changing the ini file does nothing in vista. I have options
of korean, american ,french, Italian which are downloadable or available.
The uk or British option is not there.

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

The English dictionaries in WLMail (mssp3en.lex and mssp3ena.lex) are common
to American, British, Canadian and Australian, so you should make sure that
English (United States) is Installed on the Options > Spelling tab. It's the
..ini file that determines whether color or colour is right.

You can either Select default for English, if you don't use other languages
regularly, or select Check spelling in current input language, if you do.
There will also be file(s) called langxxxx.lex in %userprofile%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Proof, which are your
custom dictionaries. You don't have to download anything, and anyway spell
checking is different in Office2007 from earlier versions.

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Noel,
Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to explain this to me.
Your fix of changing the ini file does work and I must have had problems
with permissions as the first spell.ini file did not save correctly. I have
since renamed it and rewrote the spell ini in notepad this time and it
works ok.
Many thanks again for your trouble.
Dave

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

You're welcome, Dave. I think I'll wait a bit longer before upgrading to
Vista...
For my next trick - if you've accumulated a load of acceptable spellings
(they're often just names of people and places that you use a lot but which
aren't in the dictionary) in, say, Word, then locate the custom dictionary
they're saved in (probably custom.dic in %appdata%\Microsoft\Proof), open it
in Notepad, then copy and paste into the langxxxx.lex file.

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Hi

I'm trying to do the same thing, but my Vista pc won't allow me to save the
file which I amended using notepad. I am logged on as the administrator.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Justin

Re: Spell check problems UK British English Dictionary

Hi Justin.
I wrote in notepad :

[Spellchecker]
Engine=MSSPELL3.DLL
Lex=MSSP3EN.LEX
Lang=2057

and saved the file as spell.ini in C:\Program Files\Windows
Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2

I deleted the original spell.ini file from the above location prior to
saving the new ini file.

I would also check for two copies of the spell.ini file. I had two versions
at locations as below. I altered both.

C:\Users\dave\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Windows
Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009

&
C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2
