Re: Last version of WLM

Peter,
If I may ask, from a security stand point how would one know if those files on the skydrive are safe ?

Additionally, even though some of use are familiar with the 32digit nomenclature, how would others know which msi file applies?
e.g. Install_{184E7118-0295-43C4-B72C-1D54AA75AAF7}.msi = Windows Live Mail

Re: Last version of WLM

Good point Winston, and I like your blog.

I certainly can't guarantee the integrity of the downloads on that site. Nor does SkyDrive, for upon opening the download area, a warning will appear "Downloading this file type (.msi) can potentially harm your computer." So anyone downloading such files does need to be cautious.

Personally, I have several antivirus and anti-spyware/anti-adware/anti-malware programs installed which offer excellent protection for my computer, and I scan all my downloads with two reputable antivirus programs. If I am still not satisfied, I will upload a file to http://www.virustotal.com/ and have it scanned by all 32 (at last count) virus scanning engines of participating computer security companies.

Additionally, I might run a MD5 Hash check of a file with a program such as 'febooti fileTweak Hash & CRC' (http://www.febooti.com/products/file.../hash-and-crc/) then try to verify it in some way, such as through an Internet search of the md5 hash checksum.

In the case of these files, check that they contain the Microsoft digital signature (right-click file->Properties->Digital Signatures [tab]->select signature->Details [tab]. Make sure it says "This digital signature is OK.", and the 'Certificate path' should show "Microsoft Root Authority > Microsoft Code Signing PCA > Microsoft Corporation" under the 'Certification Path' tab. For more information, see: http://jcheng.wordpress.com/2007/11/...tal-signature/

As for the msi files I find on my Computer at: C:\Program Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources (hidden folder), the MD5 hash checksums for them are as follows:

Install_{184E7118-0295-43C4-B72C-1D54AA75AAF7}.msi (Windows Live Mail)
MD5= aeaac2df2d582f81fe78cfeded629425

Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi (Windows Live Messenger)
MD5= d5012fe7aca6fa7a84f066a93a71bfb6

Install_{9176251A-4CC1-4DDB-B343-B487195EB397}.msi (Windows Live Writer)
MD5= 4912b32726dba27d37cf557797c8b8ee

Install_{AFA4E5FD-ED70-4D92-99D0-162FD56DC986}.msi (Windows Live Sign-in Assistant)
MD5= 4058ae7178220d26f81b37cdf0564a60

Install_{D5A145FC-D00C-4F1A-9119-EB4D9D659750}.msi (Windows Live Toolbar)
MD5= 1aaf2b93d94a5dd1519421505a023251

Maybe you would like to verify and publish these MD5 hash checksums Winston.

In any case, apparently one can request a standalone installer (not an .msi) through https://support.live.com/default.aspx

As for interpreting the name of the .msi files. Once the file is downloaded, in XP one can find the proper file name by hovering over the file (read mouse-over ToolTip) or by right-clicking the file->Properties->Summary [tab].

However, the 'Summary' tab is not available in Vista (something to do with the support for secondary NTFS stream properties has been dropped - see: http://blogs.msdn.com/micham/archive...ows-vista.aspx and http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776860.aspx).

Nevertheless, the 'Summary' properties of these files can be accessed in Vista by using 'Dsofile' available from: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=224351 (run FilePropDemoVB6.exe or FilePropDemoVB7.exe and open the file through it [ignore errors]). Otherwise, starting the installation will reveal what file it is.

Re: Last version of WLM

Thanks Peter..
Similar approach to protection on malware and virii at this end. Lol..I keep waiting for something to happen that lights up all the
protection mechanisms. The last threat(if one could even call it that by today's standards) was years ago...the Word macro item that
came for a co-workers file while running Office 97.

Thanks for the checksums and info..

I've not had time to update the blog or do a bit of needed maintenance..too much stuff on the backburner at this time.

Re: Last version of WLM

You're welcome Winston.

I learnt my lesson when a trojan from the internet disabled McAfee Virus Scan 6 and played havoc on my W98SE OS many years ago, forcing me to learn how to format my hard drive and reinstall the OS.

Another useful tool I discovered is a free online scanner called 'Dr.Web® Anti-virus Link Checker' (http://www.freedrweb.com/browser/), which can be used to scan a page before visiting it and a program (through its direct download link) before downloading it.

In any case, its all moot for that SkyDrive link I initially gave, as I just realised that it no longer exists (I wonder if Microsoft shut it down).

Re: Last version of WLM

I questioned that link when it first appeared quite a while ago(same concern--unknown source and security)
Don't know why its gone but not disappointed.

I do support and obviously would like to see Msft make the Msi files publicly available in addition to the Live Installer *.exe
Windows Download or GetLive option/approach purely from an ease of installation(and it could still be packaged with a SignIn
Assistant option). Though haven't thought too deeply about country/region and its possible variation on doing same.

Win98SE was a good one to learn on..boot disk and install cd, and the required drivers(98 couldn't keep up since hardware was
changing so fast). I just went through a 2nd redo of XP Pro on a laptop. Still not sure what happened on the first attempt... wifi
connection was marginal, Windows was slow and cranky. Although I knew it was going to be a battle when Windows Update failed to
install 2/3 of the 92 updates. After wiping everything and starting fresh..the second was uneventful.
