Compacting the database

Hey gang,

I see, in the maintenance tab for WLM, it is set to compact the database on
shutdown every 100 runs by default.

Unless I am just missing it, I don't see where you can manually compact at
will, like you could in OE?

Just curious, thanks.

Re: Compacting the database

Change the 100 to 1 and shut it down.

Not elegant, but accurate. More importantly, it would be nice if the
problem with signing in preventing the compacting of the database could be
fixed. In order to manually compact the database I have to "stop signing
in", close WLM, re-open it, change the 100 to 1, close it and compact the
database, open it, sign in, and change to 1 back to 100 (actually 5 in my
case).

Good to know, I did not realize you have to go through all that to just do a
compact, as I have not tried it yet.

Thanks,

Re: Compacting the database

I didn't think that signing in had anything to do with not compacting.
What I do is change the 100 to 1, close WLM, reopen, immediately close WLM.

Re: Compacting the database

In my experience Don, it makes no difference whether I am signed in or not. Database compaction fails if I have been using *Newsgroups* in WLMail.

From my experience, the method Ron described is all that is needed. That is, having changed '100' to '1', if the database compaction fails when WLMail is closed, restart WLMail and immediately* close it again (*really all that is needed here is not to use Newsgroups before closing WLMail). This works every time for me whether I am signed in or not.

It would be nice if WLMail gave us an option to "Compact the database on next shutdown".

I read about the signing in "bug" in this NG and it solved the problem for
me. Without signing out and restarting WLM I almost always get the "WLM
cannot compact the database because a folder is in use" (or words to that
effect) message. This is in 32 bit Vista Business. In Windows XP SP2 I can
compact the database pretty consistently without signing out first. What OS
do you use?
