Colin,

When I receive a message with a .jpg file attached (picture), it shows that
the picture file is considered dangerous and has been blocked. Why are .jpeg
(or .jpg, for that matter) files considered dangerous? This just recently
started.

Could it be that certain virus' are transmitted within jpeg pictures? I'd
imagine so.

This link explains the potential security threat of images in emails:

One pixel images can appear invisible in emails, but can contain a 'bug' which provides spammers with confirmation of a valid email address, or maybe even transmit a virus.

Thus the option "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" at: Tools->Safety options->Security [tab]->Download Images [section], and why the preview pane is disabled within the 'Junk e-mail' folders.
