Kiss of death

Live mail sometimes hangs up for no apparent reason specially when deleting
some mail.Even C-A-D does not kill the program.
Only way to get back the control of system is by turning off the computer.

On which OS? Your headers show that you probably have
XPsp2 but you should state this when you are describing
your problem symptoms.

If you mean that you can't launch Task Manager that way
have you tried having Task Manager always available
and using its End Process function then?

BTW I frequently see WLMail getting in a loop at shutdown
if I somehow misuse its prompt about compacting.
In that case I always check with Task Manager's Processes
tab to see what it is doing besides looping. Usually I will see
its I/O Other count going up rapidly but its I/O Other Bytes
statistic only incrementing slowly in multiples of 16. In that
case I feel safe just using End Process on it. There isn't even
a prompt then to send a message to Microsoft about this defect.

Then you have more problems than just something wrong
in WLMail, probably driver related and in any case better
handled in another newsgroup more specifically about your OS.

Good luck

You are right. I will mention it next time.

I will try it next time and keep the TM window minimized.

This seems to happen only when WLM is running and stopped responding.
I have not seen it otherwise.

The point is that WLMail is an application. An application
can not cause a symptom which makes it necessary for you
to power off your computer. I.e., something like a loop in a
driver (where the code might be non-interruptible) must be
happening. WLMail might be the only application which is
making a request which gets the driver into that state but
it is not the cause of your symptom.

BTW you should check that Ctrl-Alt-Delete normally
brings up Task Manager, e.g. when you aren't in
the problem state. Otherwise, the comment about
not being able to use that keystroke to interrupt it
may be meaningless.

Re: Kiss of death

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.

I understand that but an application can make system or I/o
calls which may put it in no exit out loop.

Yes. it does bring normally if WLM is not in the mix..
The situation occurs mostly when I delete some messages
from a folder.
WLM works fine when it does not get locked.
It seems to me WLM needs more resources than I have on my desktop.
AMD Athlon 994 Hz and 512 MB.
I have plenty of HD.
I never had problem with OE and looks like I will have to go back to OE.

Get an AV program ASAP and run it. It's likely your problem is caused by a
virus.

Use Windows Firewall and Windows Defender ASAP as well.

Re: Kiss of death

Hi Hawii Mahal,

If, after you have scanned for and removed any malware on your system, the problem still persists, I would suggest you do a repair install or standard uninstall/reinstall (messages and settings unaffected) of Windows Live Mail to see if that helps. If it doesn't then do a complete uninstall/reinstall as described below.

Complete uninstall:

1. After backing up your messages & accounts through the export options, uninstall Windows Live Mail through Control Panel.

2. Now use Regedit (or your favourite registry editor) to delete the registry Keys (if they exist)*

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop

3. Now navigate to your WLMail Message Store folder** and rename it (so you can keep it as a backup - messages can be dragged from the message store to your WLMail interface as a method of importing them, or you can import messages directly from your old Messages Store through File->Import->Messages...->Windows Live Mail->Browse... [button] to your old Windows Live Mail Message Store folder. Also, if any extra spellchecking languages have been installed, or you want to re-use your custom dictionary, then the contents of the "Proof" folder (within the default location Storage Folder) should be backed up so you can restore it after the reinstall).

4. Go to the 'Windows Live Mail' 'Program Files' folder (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) and delete it.

5. Run Windows Live Beta Remover*** if necessary.

6. Reboot your computer.

7. Now install WLMail and import your accounts and messages****. It may be best to disable any antivirus program you are running while installing WLM and running it for the first time.

*Note that because the registry key is deleted, messages, accounts, and message rules will be imported again from Outlook Express/Windows Mail, so if you do not want this to happen, first delete them from those redundant mail clients.

**To find the location of your message store, go Tools->Options...->Advanced [tab]->Maintenance->Store Folder (the default location is a hidden folder). If you have moved your Storage Folder from its default location, you should also delete/rename the old Storage Folder which remains in the default location.

The default location of Windows Live Mail's Message Store is:

Vista: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Users\<Windows user account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

XP: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Documents and Settings\<windows user account>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

***The Windows Live Beta Remover may be helpful if you have installed Windows Live beta programs previously, as it removes all the old beta installers.
