Windows Live Mail news download failure on Vista

I am finding that I can only download 9 headers from rec.sports.soccer
before an error occurs and it stops downloading, running Windows Vista,
Windows Live Mail (Version 2008 (Build 12.0.1606) ).
There are 1000's of messages available from that newsgroup.
Anyone else receiving the same Server Error 423 error and Windows Live
Mail error ID 0x800CCCA6 ?

Using Windows Live Mail (or Outlook Express), to download all headers,
one has to right-click on the particular group, then
properties/Local_File/Reset , then use pulldown menu
Tools/Synchronize_Newsgroup .
Currently this sequence yields 9 messages before aforementioned error.

Within this directory of 9 items downloaded in rec.sports soccer before
it stops downloading, I notice that one of these .nws files,
16496DF1-0000000F.nws , is of zero length.
This may be causing an error, and that particular file, when double-clicked
does generate an error, unlike other .nws files which open a window
displaying the text of that particular message/post.

It could be that Windows Live Mail is reacting to this 0 length condition,
apparently caused by the 423 error on the message header titled
"be.sport.basketball", by stopping the remaining download.

Re: Windows Live Mail news download failure on Vista

I tried visiting rec.sport.soccer [sic] via Motzarella and had no trouble
downloading the latest 600 or so posts of over 6500 available on the server.
If you have "Get n headers at a time" selected at Options > Read, try
deselecting it. If you're subscribed to the group, have you tried
unsubscribing, restarting WLMail and subscribing again? Have you tried
another server?

If none of that works and if you're feeling brave, you could unsubscribe,
close WLMail, delete the folder containing the messages already downloaded,
restart WLMail and try subscribing again.

I'm using XP, but I can't see why the OS should matter in this case.
0x800CCCA6 usually means that the message concerned was not found on the
server.

I think the 2 OSes handle email and news messaging differently.
I would be interested to know if anyone running Vista with
Windows Live Mail can download rec.sports.soccer .

Re: Windows Live Mail news download failure on Vista

I subscribed to rec.sport.soccer on my Vista OS, and downloaded all available headers, and the 300 most recent message bodies without problem.

Re: Windows Live Mail news download failure on Vista

Glad you did it..and posted the results.

I didn't think WLM would operate differently on XP or Vista, its not occurred in my experience using both o/s with WLM on the same
groups and servers..
