Where are the Files Stored

Hi

In Outlook Express your files were stored in DBX files. You could find these
folder in Options >> Maintenance >> Store Folders

Where are they in WLM?

Re: Where are the Files Stored

Tools - Options - Advanced - Maintenance - Store Folder
will show you the location of the message files.
They are stored as individual eml files, no .dbx

Re: Where are the Files Stored

Possum,
Dave has already answered the location of the store.
If I may ask, if the original question was more than a curiosity...once found what are you planning on doing with that information.

Re: Where are the Files Stored

Winows Live Mail renamed all my .dbx files to .eml files and now are only are
opened with WLM- It's imposible to view or open them with Outlook Express
Maybe i did not inform myself properly before installing WML but I don like
it...

I can no longer open any of the renamed .dbx to .eml files with Outlook
Express.
Does anyone knows how to revert or reconvert eml to .dbx files?

Will uninstalling Window Live Mail make me loose my fles?

NO! WLM did not RENAME them at all. It read the CONTENTS of the .dbx files
and used those to create NEW .eml files. Your .dbx files are still right
where you left them, and OE can still see and use them as before - but WLM
cannot.

That's the biggest difference between WLM and OE. If you received a
thousand messages from your Mom, each 4 KB in length, OE would put them all
into a single file - which it called a "folder". You might name this 4 MB
folder "Mother.dbx". If even one of those 1,000 messages got corrupted, you
probably would lose the whole Mother.dbx folder and all thousand messages
would be gone. But WLM takes each message from the .dbx file and creates a
new .eml file for it. You end up with 1,000 .eml files, each containing a
single message. If one message is corrupted, you lose that one, but the
other 999 are safe.

WLM has no idea what to do with .dbx files except to Import them, converting
them to .eml files and putting them into WLM's new Message Store. You find
the Message Store just about the same way you found OE's Store Folder:
Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder. Here you will see
the full pathname to YOUR Message Store. If you look there with Windows
Explorer, you will see that it is not a simple list of message files, but a
database, with subfolders, indexes, etc., in addition to the actual message
files.

Also, as you know, OE has no idea how to handle those new .eml files (and
..nws files for newsgroup posts). You need to use OE for .dbx files and WLM
for .eml files. Deleting WLM and ALL the .eml files will not destroy or
damage your .dbx files. And, after the Import, WLM will have no further use
for the .dbx files. Each program maintains its own store folder,
independent of the other. Some of the email gurus here (not me!) know how
to drag'n'drop individual message files from one store folder to the other,
but I've not tried that.

Re: Where are the Files Stored

In order to import Windows Live Mail e-mail messages into Outlook Express, you can always drag the e-mail messages from the Windows Live Mail interface into a folder on your Desktop, and from there onto your Outlook Express interface.

I though you could back them up and that way back up your E-Mail Data.

What is the best way to back up your E-Mail and Folder data..?

Re: Where are the Files Stored

One can always copy the Message Store folder to a different location as an archive, though selective copying or dragging folders
back into the Message store from that archived location may present problems.

WLM provides options to back-up and protect the integrity of the message store for mail and news accounts and messages and if
necessary import later into WLM.

Accounts: (for Email Accounts and Newsgroup Servers)
Method 1:
Tool/Accounts/
Select an Account
Export
- the above will export each accounts settings as a *.iaf file
Method 2:
File/Export/Accounts
Select Account
Export

Messages:
File/Export/Messages/Windows Live Mail
Click Next
Browse to a Blank/Empty folder(required each time this method is used)
- an option to create a new folder is available
Click OK, Next
Choose All or Selected Folders
Click Next
Wait for it to complete the process
Click Finish

Suggestions:
1. Create folders(in your preferred location) for each type of export in advance(e.g. Email, News, and Messages)
2. Do not interrupt the exporting process to avoid corruption.
3. Exported Messages' folder contents are indicative of WLM's contents at that point in time.

Finally,a note... since WLM syncs with Hotmail, all messages for Hotmail/Live/Msn.com accounts are also on the Hotmail server and
will remain so until deletion by either WLM or the Hotmail web interface.

Re: Where are the Files Stored

Hi, R.C White
I insist on my previous statement. (I erroneusly said Rename instead of
Convert or create NEW as you explained)
WLM converted (create?) ALL my .dbx files to .eml files but then WLM
DELETED most of my .dbx files.
Now all .dbx files that I had previously placed on separte folders located
on My Documents as well as the ones on the OE's Store Folder are totally GONE.
Does any one have a way to solve it?
I'm looking for the email gurus here that know how to drag'n'drop individual
message files from one store folder to the other, but I want them saved as
..dbx
