mail client problem:

I have Hotmail but I've noticed when I click on contact us on some
sites instead of going to Hotmail it says 'the default mail client not
properly installed'. It use to perform this function but for some
reason it doesn't now. Could someone please help me with this? If I'm
not including any information that's needed please let me know.

Thanks,
Robert

Re: mail client problem:

I understand that you want your Internet Explorer to open your Windows Live Hotmail account when you click on a 'mailto' link in a web page. This will happen if Windows Live Hotmail is your default e-mail program for mailto links.

If you have installed an e-mail client, it would probably have made itself the default e-mail program.

But how defaults are set differs in XP and Vista, so you should let us know what OS you are using.

Whether you have installed the latest version of Windows Live Mail (12.0.1606) will also have a bearing on how Windows Live Hotmail is set as default, so let us know if you have it installed.

Sorry, I should have included that information, I'm using XP with
Windows Live Messenger although I had a pop-up today saying it had a
newer version available.

Re: mail client problem:

The same way you find out with any Windows program:
Go to its menu bar and click on Help, About.

I checked and didn't see anything. However I updated my Windows Mail
yesterday so that I have Windows Live Mail and also the older version
Windows Live Messenger. Should I not uninstall Live Messenger in favor
of Live Mail?

Re: mail client problem:

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are email & newsreader programs.
Live Messenger is a chat/instant message program.

If you mean Windows Mail, you can't uninstall it.

I was only trying to provide the requested information so I can
resolve the problem. The only reason that I use Live messenger is that
it allows me to connect to Hotmail and automatically signs me in.
Other than that I don't use it all that much. I still don't know what
version of Windows Live mail I have as it wasn't listed under
Help>About

I've already gone into Tools>Internet Options>Programs and selected
Windows Live Hotmail. I know I need to do more but I'm not sure
exactly what.
