| Guest | Windows Live Mail- Issue When live mail compacted messages, all of them totally disappeared. They are not in the storage folder. Other mail folders that I created have disappeared also. I need to know how in the world I can retrieve these messages. It is a POP3 server. One minute I'm looking at all of the mail. I it out, the compact message box pops up and when I re-open the mail, everything is gone. PLEASE HELP |

account folders? Is View > Current view set to Show all messages? Have you deleted any folders? What folders do you have in Storage folders? -- Noel Next time you post, please think of a slightly more descriptive Subject line, and remember to state your OS and WLMail versions. | Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue It doesn't do anything to the messages. It compacts the "message store", which is a database that keeps track of where the messages are. Your messages are still there. Look in every folder, and make sure that the View for each folder is set to Show All Messages. -- Vista Home Premium 32 SP1 http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview "Missreet" <Missreet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:BB691588-0850-4AB5-9DA9-50567A41D5A3@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue It's gone Dave, even folders that I created to separate some of the messages are gone. Something happened when I closed the mail out and now it is gone. I need to know how and where I can find them. "Dave" wrote:

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue If all of your folders have disappeared, try creating a new one as a test, and see if the others come back. I seem to recall a user posting that. To see the location of your WLM messages, open WLM, and click on Tools - Options - Advanced - Maintenance - Store Folder This will show you where it is. If you want, you can copy this path, then open Windows Explorer, and paste the path into the address bar. \AppData is normally hidden, so you may have to change the View settings to show the folders. There should be folders for each email account, and for the Storage Folders. Your emails should be in those, as individual .eml files. -- Vista Home Premium 32 SP1 http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview "Missreet" <Missreet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:09B23B6D-3D6E-4C83-BCAB-39678E732D39@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue An eml file for each non-deleted messages are stored in indvidual folders under your account name(Save, Sent, Inbox etc) on your hard drive. In XP, look in your user profile in the Windows Live Mail folder. It is nested in your profile under \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\<your email account name>. Once found, double click to open any folder ? Do you see any files. - they should be in numeric form with an eml extension. Report back what you find. -- ...winston ms-mvp windows live mail "Missreet" <Missreet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:09B23B6D-3D6E-4C83-BCAB-39678E732D39@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue Hi, Missreet. When all else fails, there's always the brute force method: The Command Prompt window - which some of us still call the "DOS" window, even though we know that it's not really MS-DOS. Most of the old DOS commands still work there as well or better than they did a couple of decades ago. There are several ways to open the Command Prompt window; perhaps the quickest is to click the Start orb and type "cmd" into the Search box, then press Enter. (If you right-click on Cmd.exe, which should appear at the top of the Search results, then click Run as Administrator and furnish the password, you will open an Administrator:Command Prompt window, in which any command or application launched will run with elevated privileges; that probably is not necessary to find those .eml files.) In the Command Prompt window, use the Dir command (from the days before Directories became known as Folders). As with most commands in this window, type "Dir /?" to see a mini-Help file showing switches and parameters available with the Dir command. Note especially /s to list the contents of subfolders and /a to show all files, even those with Hidden or System attributes. You can search a single folder or an entire volume with the Dir command. Let's start at the top... At the prompt, type: dir c:\*.eml /s/a You might have time for a cup of coffee if you have a large drive with lots of files, especially if there are lots of .eml files, because this will list every one of them, even if there are thousands. The "c:\" tells it to start at the Root of Drive C: and the /s says to search all subfolders, so this could take a while. (The /a is probably not necessary to find .eml files, but I usually include it.) If you must stop the process, press <Ctrl>+C, which issues the Break signal and returns you to the prompt. To save time, you can narrow down the search by first navigating to the top of the folder tree where you think the .eml files may be and start your search there (dir *.eml /s). You might also want to try dir *.nws to find newsgroup posts. As Winston said, the email files "should be in numeric form with an eml extension." For example, a couple of emails from my grandson are named 29D64E0F-00000003.eml and 74F55013-00000001.eml. Not very descriptive and easy to overlook if you're not expecting that kind of filename. Once you've located one .eml file, you should find plenty of others nearby. Then you can move on to the process of recovering them. Post back when you get to this point. RC -- R. C. | Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue HI Dave: Thanks for trying to help me. I located the folder, but the message are not there. What I did find is a folder in the backup labeled new it has about 6,160kb in it. Is it possible that this is where the messages could be? Then the issue is that it has a file ext of msmessagerstore and I have no way of being able to open this file to see if my messages are in there. I even created a subfolder in live mail hoping maybe they would dump in it. No luck. "Dave" wrote:

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail- Issue What else is there in your Store folder apart from the folder named Backup? One more thing to try (please follow these instructions very carefully): Close down WLMail Click Start Click Run Type regedit in the box and hit Enter Maximize the window. Registry Editor is a bit like Windows Explorer. In the left-hand pane, click on the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Then on the plus sign next to Software Then Microsoft Then Windows Live Mail In the right hand pane, scroll down until you find Tree If it's there, what does it say in the column headed Data? If it's not there, in the Menu bar at the top, click Edit, then select New > DWORD value Type Tree and hit Enter Now double click on Tree, type 1 and hit Enter Close Registry Editor using the red cross in the top right hand corner Restart WLMail Any joy? -- Noel "Missreet" <Missreet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:00865B9B-BECC-4EBE-9B76-B1D63E6F4363@xxxxxx
