old folders

I had setup Windows Live Mail Desktop on a previous computer, storing my
files/folders on an external (K) drive. When I downloaded and installed
WLMD on my new computer it didn't automatically "see" the directory on the K
drive and setup on the C. I tried going into the maintenance section to
change the stored folders directory but when I tried to save it to the
previously setup directory on the K drive, I got the prompt that the
directory wasn't empty and I need to setup another one. So, I've done that
but wonder if there isn't some way to avoid this mess in the first place
and, now that I have it, would the fix be as simple as copying the files
from one directory to the other?

Thanks

Re: old folders

Hi, TS.

The word "Desktop" was dropped from the name of Windows Live Mail in May
2007, almost a year ago, while the program was still in beta. I see your
post was made with Windows Live Mail 2008, build 12.0.1606, which is the
current, RTM version, released in November 2007. The word persists, though,
in the name of this newsgroup, and many WLM users persist in using that word
in the name. But whenever we see WLMD, we first wonder whether the user
really does mean WLM - or a beta version of WLMD. :^{ In your case, did
you really use a WLMD beta on that previous computer? Then you may be
having a beta-to-RTM transition problem in addition to whatever else is
involved.

Are you using Windows XP or Vista? Vista's rules for users and permissions
are much more restrictive. In Vista, we often have to give ourselves
permission to even "see" files that we created with WinXP.

Does Disk Management properly identify each of your drives? There may be
confusion as to just which drive is K:.

Re: old folders

The exact message I get when I want to switch to my backup Message Store is "There appears to be a Windows Live Mail message store already in the folder that you have chosen. Do you want to switch to using that store? If not, please select an empty directory for your store location'.

So all you should have to do is select 'Yes' to switch to the location of your Message Store on your 'K' drive.

However, in the current build of Windows Live Mail, copying WLMail's Message Store to use on another computer is not guaranteed to work well because sometimes a total recovery of the database and messages can ensue. The reason for this when there is no genuine corruption is not clear to me.

When such a full recovery occurs, all the messages will be found under 'Storage folders' within subfolders of a folder called 'Recovered items'.

If no recovery occurs, all is well, but if a full recovery does occur, it is really just as if you have imported all the messages, and you will need to move them back to their proper folders, creating new folders where necessary.
