"Reclaim space on closing" Error

When closing Windows Live, it usually if not always ask if I want to
reclaim spaced. A no answer is find, but if I select yes, it takes a few
seconds and then decides that another process is locking the file.

What gives?

Yea, if you need it I will record the exact messages, I just keep
forgetting to do that.

Re: "Reclaim space on closing" Error

"Windows Live" includes a whole suite of programs. I assume you meant
Windows Live Mail. Open Windows Live Mail, and without doing anything
in it, close it. This time when you answer yes to that prompt, it should
be successful.

Thanks, I will give it a try.

Also sorry about not noting it was Live Mail. I should know better.

Re: "Reclaim space on closing" Error

This is becoming a bigger problem for me lately. It will not close
properly, no matter what I do. I've followed all previous suggestions and
it just will not close. And you can't force a close because the compacting
ability closes too.

It seems to be affected most by moving the mouse pointer.
If I reply to the buttons by the keyboard it doesn't lock up as often.

Explain? You may have to use Task Manager to End task
wlmail.exe Only do this if the Processes line for that task
is clearly not doing I/O. E.g. activate all statistics for the
Processes tab and see that the only activity is only a slow
periodic I/O Other and I/O Other bytes increment by 16
exactly.

Re: "Reclaim space on closing" Error

When I close WLM and it is time to compact, WLM does not close and when I
click on the OK to compact the database, I get the message that the folder
is in use by Windows Live Mail or some other program. Then when I click OK
on that error message, WLM closes, but not before and I waited for over 5
minutes for WLM to close on it's own.

Re: "Reclaim space on closing" Error

There is a known shutdown bug in the current version of WLM.
The workaround is to enable the option "Upload Larger Images to
the Web When Sending a Photo E-mail".

Re: "Reclaim space on closing" Error

Been there, done that. I've had that checked all along but still no go. As
long as it doesn't ask to compact the data base, it closes properly every
single time, but as soon as it is time to compact, it messes up. I used to
be able to open WLM and close it without doing anything and it would work
fine, but don't know what happened to it lately.

My problem symptom starts right there at the prompt.
If I hover the mouse pointer, especially over the No button,
the prompt goes into an hourglass, never to return.
That's when one instance of the TM I/O Other Bytes 16
symptom state starts. However, I have seen it happening
independently of doing a close too. So for me at least
that loop is the more general problem which causes
the described symptom and other "hangs" as well.

Quote:

> WLM does not close
Not immediately? It may be doing some other cleanup
before reaching the prompt state. You could use TM
to check what it is doing then too.

I have never seen that symptom. If it occurs frequently
I would use ProcMon to get more details about what
is in use and by what. Alternativey if you identify only
the object which is in contention you could get a better idea
of the holders of the object by using Process Explorer
and doing a Ctrl-F Find for its handles. You may find
via ProcMon also that there are some hidden diagnostics
being saved somewhere.

Re: "Reclaim space on closing" Error

That seems to be working for me.

Thanks.
