Disfunctional Message Counter

Quite frequently now, the WLM program will not keep track of unread messages,
over in the left pane where the e-mail accounts are shown. When first
signing on, new messages do not increment the counter, nor does deleting
messages or the entie Junk Mail folder cause any counter action. Closing and
restarting the WLM program seems always to fix this; that is, it's just the
initial opening of the program that fails to keep track. WLM Version 2008
(Build 12.0.1606) running under XP-Pro.

Try rebuilding your Quick views: delete the registry Value
"SearchFolderVersion" under the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail. This will cause
WLMail to rebuild its Quick view data store when it is next started
(PeterR's wording).

You might have some success if you right click on the group that is giving
you trouble and choose Properties/Local File and then Reset.

Re: Disfunctional Message Counter

Thanks, Ron,

But when I bring up Properties in any group, all I see is the usual
info relating to the account... General, Servers, Connection, Security,
Advanced. No mention of Local File anywhere under these tabs.

Re: Disfunctional Message Counter

Is that where I right-click and go to Edit DWORD Value, and then under the
box that says Value data: 10, simply delete the 10, or put in a zero, or
what? Not a pro at this RegEdit stuff. Thanks.

Re: Disfunctional Message Counter

No, just mark the value SearchFolderVersion and hit Delete. It will be
recreated next time you start WLMail. It's best to do this with the program
closed, of course.

Re: Disfunctional Message Counter

Okay, Noel, I will give that a try. Thanks... and I'll let you know.

Re: Disfunctional Message Counter

Okay, done. And, sure enough, when the computer booted next time, the item
was back in the Register, and with the same apparent value as before.
Actually, the message counter is working okay now. I think that when it
failed to work properly was when there was a huge amount of Spam in the
inboxes of a couple of work-related accounts. The WLM program seems to keep
up with a hundred or so Junk Mail messages, but seems to get overwhelmed by
several hundred if the account hasn't been signed-onto for a few days...
vacation, for instance. Thanks for the tips, though; it's good to know there
are knowledgable and helpful out there.
