xp and vista !!

ok I have xp home sp2 and vista ultimate.
In xp home sp2 I have wlmd installed and have all my mail accounts set up in
it !!
In vista I don't have it installed yet.
I want to have wlmd to use the same accounts I have for xp sp2 in vista? So
I don't have to read or redown load the same e mail that on the other windows
system. plus i would be able to save disk space !!

Re: xp and vista !!

That is the default set up for WM. I assume it's the same for WLM.

Re: xp and vista !!

Sorry, I don't really understand what you want to do.
Don't you want all emails accessible on both computers?
How do you expect to save disk space?

Re: xp and vista !!

Hello gary
i will type it out this way might be better?
1. (windows xp wlmd) has all the email accounts it puts them in folders on
the hard drive.
2. I put wlmd on vista i have to make new folders for it on the hard drive
or in wlmd account folders I.E inbox etc etc.
3 I install wlmd in vista and want to use (windows xp wlmd) folders in vista.

windows xp wlmd>-----hard drive folders----<windows vista wlmd
Both xp and vista use the same space for the email accounts.

A.(windows xp)C:\Documents and Settings\user-account\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

B.(vista)G:\Users\user-account\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

use A. in B. or
In other words use A. to share with B.
also the user account are both the same name but the ones used here are not
the right names!! hope this helps if not reply back and try typing it out
another way !!

Re: xp and vista !!

OK, you didn't say this before, but you have Vista and XP installed
on the same computer, in different partitions. You want to share
one set of WLM mail folders between the two operating systems.
Incidentally, the email program hasn't been called WLMD since
April of last year, when the 'D' was dropped.
I don't think it will work, because Vista is very fussy about owner-
ship of files. Also, if you share the data directory, it would also share
the account information, which is encrypted differently for each
Windows user. As a minimum, it would corrupt the password for
each mail account.

Re: xp and vista !!

Gary didn't think that it would work, but I don't know why it wouldn't work.
You don't have the file sharing problem.
It isn't necessary to share the account settings to share the Store Folder.
The OE Store Folder could be shared between different operating systems and
between different Windows users.
I can't remember any sharing questions on this newsgroup or questions on
moving the Store Folder.

Re: xp and vista !!

What you're asking in theory should work, but you're taking your store in
your own hands; and as of such, if anything happens you only have yourself
to blame. So, now that we have my version of a disclaimer here is a bit of
advice and theory-craft:

1) create the first store on XP (the store version created on xp should work
on vista, but not the other way around)
2) move that store to your shared location
tools->options->advanced->maintenance->store folder...-> change...
3) MAKE A BACK UP NOW! (because after this point, it may go down hill)
4a) here there are 2 options, make a back up of your registry hive of the
wlm node it's at hkcu\software\microsoft\windows live mail then import that
into vista, provided the drive letters are the same, it should work.
though, you'll likely have to re-enter all your passwords.
4b) or after you've run wlm on vista open up regedit, and change the
hkcu\software\microsoft\windows live mail\Store Root path.

potential point of pain:
1) if you ever reach the state of store corruption on vista, the recovery
will happen and likely that store will not work on xp. (period)
2) settings you change in xp or vista won't cross over to the other app.
3) when wlm is upgraded what you're doing will break. I probably should say
"should" but I think it's better at this point to focus on the negatives.
4) you most likely will run into contact issues
5) if you have a hotmail account, things may start going badly with syncing.
(it should be fine, but again you're in uncharted territory)
6) passwords are likely going to be your biggest problem because they use a
machine specific hash, and you'll be running on 2 separate machines ( or at
least the app will think so), so you'll likely have to enter these every
time you sync.

If this works, good for you. if it doesn't oh well. it really is a lot
safer to have separate stores and besides, disk space is cheap these days.

Re: xp and vista !!

"Sharing the store folder" means sharing
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
or its XP equivalent.
Look in that directory and you'll see the .oeaccount files. What do
you suppose is in those files? I have heard from several people who
tried to share a store folder between separate Windows users who
report that the account passwords are messed up each time a
different user logs in.

Re: xp and vista !!

If you restrict the accounts to Live ID email accounts(hotmail, live, and/or msn.com) then you can almost achieve your intent since
all messages until deleted(in either client on the respective o/s) will remain on the msn server.

While sharing the stores might make sense, it is not the only piece of WLM that is unique to a location(hard drive), folder
nomenclature on the hard drive, and registry. Imo, success if achievable would be short term.
