Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

I upgraded to the Live version of Windows Mail and now I have a problem.
Whenever a new message arrives, the icon, in the notification area, will
change, so I can tell there is new messages. This is good but the problem
is that this icon is showing "new message" when junk mail arrives! The icon
will not change back to regular icon until I open the junk mail or delete
it. Outlook does not act like this.

Is there a way to make Windows Live Mail NOT to consider messages that go to
the junk mail folder as new messages?

For the records, I opted for having Windows Live Mail hidden when I minimize
it so only the icon in the notification area is visible.

Thanks.
Andy

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

No, you can't change that.
I'm sure it is on the developers' to-do list for the next release,
since it has been brought up here many times.

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

Hi, Andy.

Just to clear up some confusion caused by Microsoft's product-namers:
Windows Live Mail is not "the Live version of Windows Mail": it is a
separate program, not an upgrade of WM. Yes, WLM looks a lot like WM, and
they both look a lot like OE, but they are three different programs.
(WLMail and WLMessenger - and a few other apps - are parts of the Windows
Live family that Microsoft introduced last year; WM and OE are not in
Windows Live.)

You probably knew that, but a lot of newbies read these messages and might
be confused.

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

Actually, I learned that by installing it (the "Live" apps) and finding both
co-existing in my system. Then, I asked a question about it here and
someone told me they do co-exist and WLM is not an upgrade or update to WM.
But, in my inner thoughts, I still see it as an upgrade/update and I would
prefer they were upgrade to the non-Live similar apps.

But, to be honest, I am kind of disappointed with WLM. First, the junk
messages are being considered "new messages" which makes no sense and makes
it kind of annoying (I receive ten times more junk messages then good
messages). Secondly, I am having problems with the signing-in to the Live
apps (like Family Safety) that keeps me bothering/asking to sign-in even
when I have set up automatic sign-in and not having signed out. I think
these Live apps need some serious polishing. But I will keep trying get
used to them... :-)

Thanks.

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

To ensure the person responsible for managing Family Safety is the person accessing the redundant request is currently deemed
necessary.
- in a home environment with shared users(one id with shared users is quite common contrary to recommendation) choosing this
approach makes quite a bit of sense. Imo, I wouldn't expect this to change, nor would I like it to, regardless of automatic sign on
configuration.

I agree that the "new message" apparitions are distracting and almost never
useful. The strangest aspect, to me, is that they usually appear many
minutes after I've already read the messages - or marked the obviously junk
messages as Read and deleted them.

And I also, "in my inner thoughts", think of WLM as an upgrade to WM. ;^}

While we were beta-testing WLM last year, I ran it alongside WM, with WM as
my main app until WLM "went gold". To make sure that my email archives were
complete, I set both apps to Leave a copy of messages on server, with WLM
set to Remove from server after 14 days. Thus, so long as I run WM at least
every couple of weeks, its database wouldn't have gaps. But I haven't run
WM in months now, so I suppose that plan isn't working anymore and my only
complete message store is the one in WLM, including what I Imported from WM
(including what WM had imported from OE) long ago.

I've never run any other parts of the "Live" family, so I don't know
anything about Family Safety.

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

My junk mail is not listed as new mail. I just got 20 new messages and 10
junk messages and it was listed as 20 new messages. The junk messages were
not listed.

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

We are talking specifically about the different icon that shows up in the
notification area when new messages arrive. In my case, be them junk
messages only or good messages, the icon will change to show there are new
messages.

So, if you receive just a bunch of junk messages (no good messages), does
the icon in the notification area change for you?

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

I run Outlook (not Express) in my desktop computer (WinXP) and only that
client cleans the email servers when I check them. WLM is being used in my
new notebook, where I have Windows Vista, and I set up WLM (and WM) to not
delete messages from the server. I also think that no matter how many
computers one has, it's wise that only one of them removes the messages from
the servers so you know that all your messages can always be found in that
computer. The problem is that messages sent from the other computers will
not be in that database, unless we send a copy of it to ourself.

Re: Junk messages counted as new message when arrived

Hi, Andy.

I've never been a big user of Outlook, although I've had it installed for
years. I used OE until Vista/WM came along. Then I used WM until I
switched to the WLM beta; once WLM was final, I've used nothing else very
much.

I agree that only one mail client should be set to delete messages from the
server - and only after a few days if other clients are used for the same
account.
