Newsgroups I've subscribed to Keep Disappearing

I use teranews free newsgroup server and MS Windows Live Mail as my Reader.

I was subscribing to about ten newsgroups and a few days ago, they just
started evaporating. Then I tried resubscribing and reloading the posts and
then they disappeared again. I never had this happen before with any of the
other news reader software I have used.

Any ideas?

Regards,
John E. Golden

was there any error dialog at all? also, could you give me an example of
the group names you're looking for?

No error messages at all.

Some of the NewsGroups that have disappeared on me include:
rec.music.classical.guitar
rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic
rec.music.makers.guitar.jazz
alt.horology
rec.photo.marketplace.digital

I'm running Vista Business and I installed Service Pack 1 on 3/18/2008, the
first day it became available. But I didn't seem to have any problems until
a few days ago.

nuts, I was hoping for some embarrassing group names. :-)

did you verify that the groups still exist on that server?

Yes, I reloaded all the groups on the server and subscribed again, but then
not only do they disappear from my desktop, but also from the server until I
reload again. Strange, eh?

I also use Teranews and the same thing is happening to me. Last night, many
of the dozen or so groups I subscribe to would not download new messages.
And this morning only three groups were available. The rest had been
deleted or in some way removed. Of course, I've contacted Teranews and
escalated my inquiry per their form-letter response.

I find several groups now not listed on their server. And these are just
boring groups like alt.sys.pc-clone.dell not any of the more daring binary
groups. I haven't checked into any of them, not that I have anything
against them, I just haven't checked them out lately.

Be more precise? What started "evaporating"?
The newsgroups or the messages in them?

If newsgroups are being removed, e.g. not reported
when the client does a LIST request, unfortunately
they are removed from the client too.

If it is just a case of messages being removed quicker
than you like you can blame the server for that symptom too.

If this is a frequently occurring or predictably periodic
symptom you could try some tracing. The troubleshooting
log of news can give you some clues about why the messages
would be deleted. Unfortunately to get confirmation about
the LIST changes you either have to do a TCP packet trace
e.g. using netcap and Ethereal or you can simulate a LIST
request using a telnet client to the server's port 119.

Now I'm getting the sense that it was messages which
are disappearing? That can happen if you are connecting
to multiple supposedly cloned servers which aren't quite
synchronized. In that environment you are best served
by doing a Synchronize command with All Messages
as a download criterion. E.g. try to get the headers and
the bodies from the same server at the same time.
Again, a troubleshooting log could give you some clues.

Ask the server operator. If it was only a one-time thing
they might have been doing some maintenance.

The Newsgroups just seemed to evaporate off the server. Then, I would reset
the list of available Newsgroups and re-subscribe and then they would
evaporate again.....both off my computer and off the server until I reset
the list again.

It's not a one-time thing, it's been going on continually for a few days. I
have asked the server operator, but they have not yet responded.

I would take that as a sign that the server operator was not
interested in hosting those newsgroups and was deleting them
regularly as part of its maintenance activities.

Re: Newsgroups I've subscribed to Keep Disappearing

If you can't resolve with your ISP you might want to try using a real NNTP
client rather than the one that's been shoehorned into your SMTP client

Whenever I've used a mail client as an NNTP client I've run into snags,
similarly whenever I've used an NNTP client as an SMTP client I've had
problems. Just because you have a hammer, it doesn't mean everything is else
a nail.

Your search engine will find you an NNTP client if you type "news group
reader client", have a look at the comparative reviews to get an idea of
which ones are worth looking at.
