Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

Ok - it gets asked every day - but then the answer must be easy - What are
the benefits of Live mail over Vista mail (why should change)?

Re: Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

I made the switch yesterday after looking into that very question:
The dealbreaker for Vista Windows Mail was that it only remembers 29
auto-completes
when you start to type in the address you're sending the note to.
What a ridiculous limitation, but typical Microsoft doing everything they do
about half-baked.

Windows Live Mail has been a joy so far. It seems to have included
everything that made Outlook Express
great, and the wonderful possibilities that Windows Mail might have had, and
combined it all into this new app called
Windows Live Mail.

Why Vista even bothers to ship Windows Mail completely baffles me. Windows
Live Mail for the desktop is
a far superior application, and has been very smooth sailing for me going on
36 hours now.

Re: Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

WLM is receiving ongoing Microsoft development. WM is not.
WLM accommodates Hotmail accounts.
WLM has many improvements over WM, such as the real-time
spell checker (underlining typos immediately with a red squiggly),
auto-correction of commonly misspelled words, and better auto-
completion when typing in the recipients. Also, when adding a
Contacts group to the address line, WLM (unlike WM) allows the
group to be expanded so you can delete some of those recipients.
WLM is better for those who have 2 or 3 accounts because it
keeps emails from different accounts separated.

It's my understanding Microsoft has basically discontinued support for
Windows Mail in Vista. For this reason alone I would switch to Windows Live
Mail. Also, Mr. Sommer has also pointed out another good reason.
Of course, I could be wrong about Microsoft abandoning Windows Mail.

Re: Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

You're preaching to the choir. You should have cross-posted to
the Vista Mail newsgroup, so I'll take the liberty of doing just that.

Re: Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

running both at the moment and soon as i added a newsgroup i saw a big
benefit for me - considered it a bug in O/Express and Vista mail never took
the opportunity to fix it

this being the red highlighting of group that contained unread/watched
messages - on previous versions (incl vista mail) you can't tell whether you
had read all the messages - only way to find out was to select a different
group (wait for that to download) and look to see if the group heading was
still red - contrarywise with Live mail, when you've read the last message
you can see the group heading turn to black, even though it's still selected

Re: Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

The blog at this link provides a useful comparison table (it refers to Windows Live mail Desktop, but it is still relevant): http://morethanmail.spaces.live.com/...F9A1!214.entry

I strongly suspect that Windows Live Mail simply wasn't ready to go when
Vista went into public beta...and Microsoft couldn't release an OS without
some sort of email + NNTP client. It might also have been that Microsoft
would get their knuckles slapped for putting a Windows Live product into the
OS.

Myself, I wonder why there isn't an "upgrade" offered to go from WM to WLM
as part of Windows Update.

Re: Vista Mail vs Windows Live Mail

That's my suspicion as well.
I was a bit surprised when SP1 didn't replace WM with WLM.
