Live Mail Newsgroups

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2 with DSL connection and
160GB hard drive with 132GB of free memory.

I'm trying to set up viewing Google newgroups on my Live Mail, however
when I try to do so I get to the third screen and it asks :

Type the name of the Internet news (NNTP) server your Internet
provider
has given you.

News(NNTP)server:
(field to enter)

If your Internet service provider has informed you that you must log
on to
your news(NNTP) server and has provided you with an NNTP account name
and password, then select the check box below.

(box) My news server requires me to log on

I have only the vague idea of what this means and I don't know how to
find this
information? Also, I tried using Microsoft Outlook for this but when
I clicked on it, it said:

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook
Express
4.01 or greater. You can install Outlook Express be running
IE5Setup.exe
from the IE5 folder located on your CD or through the Windows Update
website.

I also right clicked on it and it's configured for my old ISP and
don't know how to
reconfigure it or for Outlook Express if I can get it to download as I
think it's the
cause of some of the other problems I have been having such as not
being able
to click on 'contact us' and have my hotmail open up wheras it use
to.

I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.

Re: Live Mail Newsgroups

Google Groups does not use NNTP, so you can't use Windows Live
Mail (WLM) for that. Google Groups are viewed with a browser.

If you want to see Usenet newsgroups in a news reader like WLM,
get a news server name from your ISP.

Re: Live Mail Newsgroups

You can use msnews.microsoft.com as an NNTP server to access Microsoft
discussion groups, like this one. That will get you past the third screen.
It doesn't require a pass word. Once you get that working you can establish
an account with a for-pay or free NNTP server to access all of Usenet.

Microsoft Outlook is not useful for reading news. Which version do you
have? It is part of your Microsoft Office installation. If Outlook won't
start then report which version of Office you have.

Is your IE7 working OK? Something weird has happened to your Outlook
Express. You may have to reinstall it. On the other hand, if you have
Windows Live Mail installed you shouldn't need it.

RE: Live Mail Newsgroups

Google Groups is an HTTP/HTML wrapper around Usenet, thus it gives access to
USENET groups, from within a web browser, including the ability to reply etc.
It is good for folks wanting casual access to a group. But you use it via
your Web Browser not your mail client.

If you have need for anything more than casual access to USENET groups then
Google Groups is probably not for you. Light users can probably get away
with using a their mail program as a new reader. Those intending moderate or
intensive use would be better off using a purpose designed news reader.

You also need access to a news reader server, your ISP can probably provide
this. Be warned ISP servers, are often censored and poorly administered, eg
my ISP doesn't have microsoft.public.windows.live newsgroups. So you may
need to use a commercial USP (usenet service provider), there's a few large
ones - and a lot of little ones), I use one of the larger ones for about
10USD a month.

I think Google Groups feeds off Giganet.

Re: Live Mail Newsgroups

You should start another thread for your Hotmail problem.

Try Start, Run, "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /reg

Hmmmm this is all very confusing to me. If I'm understanding you
correctly your saying to use msnews.microsoft.com as an NNTP server
to get past the third screen and then use another NNTP server to
access the google site I want to view? How do I know what NNTP server
to use?

I guess I should have stated at the outset the problem I'm trying to
get around
the newsgroup I frequent is being bombarded with spam along with the
usual
trolls which frequent it and I would like to set up some sort of kill
file so I won't
have to deal with all that unncessary clutter.

I don't know which version of Microsoft Outlook I have; I checked on
SIW and it
doesn't even show it under installed programs although I have a
desktop icon for
it. So I suppose I lost it or unistalled it along the way but as you
say it's not the
best for reading news.

IE7 'appears' to be working ok but that doesn't mean anything. I have
some other
strangethings that have happened such trying to create a User account
but it could
not access Live Messenger. I spent over a week with Microsft trying to
get it to work
all for naught and they were next to useless and didn't resolve the
problem which may
be indicative of a larger one that I'm unaware of.

Lastly, let me stress that I'm disabled and financially strapped so
that taking my computer
in or buying a news reader is not an option. However I think I can
follow directions to resolve
this if given.

Thanks,

Robert

Re: Live Mail Newsgroups

Why do you keep saying "Google site"? If all you want to is see
Google sites, use your browser.
Usenet newsgroups are not synonymous with Google sites. There
were Usenet newsgroups long before there was Google.

The best way to access non-Microsoft newsgroups is by
setting up a new news (NNTP) account in Windows Live Mail.
You get the NNTP server name and login credentials from your ISP.

Here are some instructions on how to set up msnews.microsoft.com
as a newsgroup server in an older email/newsreader program:

http://www.insideoe.com/resources/communities.htm

See if that helps. However, if it does, this server will give you access
only to newsgroups whose names start with microsoft.public., not
all of them.

I don't think there is an NNTP server that accesses the Google Groups
website directly. However, many of the Google Groups are also
available as newsgroups on other NNTP servers.

Ask your internet provider if they have a newsgroup server, and if so,
where to find their instructions for setting up to use it.

If they don't have one, and you need a free server, even if it's restricted
to text-only newsgroups, try this one:

Outlook comes as part of some, but not all, of these extra cost
packages, so check if you have any of them installed:

<http://us1.trymicrosoftoffice.com/default.aspx?re_ms=oo&culture=en-US>

Even if you have it, it does not have the capability of reading news.
