| | Microsoft Outlook I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2 with DSL connection and 160GB hard drive with 132GB of free memory. I tried opeing Microsoft Outlook which I've never used but when trying to open it to read newsgroups it said: Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater. You can install Outlook Express be running IE5Setup.exefrom the IE5 folder located on your CD or through the Windows Update website. I also right clicked on it and it's configured for my old ISP and don't know how to reconfigure it or for Outlook Express if I can get it to download as I think it's the cause of some of the other problems I have been having such as not being able to click on 'contact us' and have my hotmail open up wheras it use to. I also check my SIW under installed programs and it doesn't even list Outlook, so should I try and re-install it from my originial CD or is there a way to download Outlook Express or should is it even worth the effort and should just forget about it? If you have Vista, versions 2003 and later of Outlook run well; versions 2000 and 2002 run, but with some problems. However, Outlook does not have the capability to read newsgroups; only to accept requests for newsgroup access and pass them off to a program with that capability, such as Outlook Express. Some versions of Outlook Express can be downloaded, but none of them will run under Vista. If I remember correctly, most versions of Windows older than Vista come with a version of Outlook Express already built in. Since it's built in, it often doesn't show on the installed programs list. If this is unchecked, check it. XP will then install Outlook Express and when you check for updates it will get the newest one. Cheers, Earle |

| | Re: Microsoft Outlook So what does happen when you click on the a 'mailto' ('contact us') link in a web page, and what happens when you click on the 'E-mail' icon in your Start menu? As for getting 'mailto' links in a web page to open up your Hotmail in the browser, you should reset Windows Live Hotmail as your default e-mail client. To do this, (assuming you have not yet installed the e-mail client Windows Live Mail) go to: Start->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Internet Programs [section]->E-mail: and select "Windows Live Mail" (which is really for Windows Live Hotmail), as the default E-mail program for Internet Services. If it is already selected, select another program in the list (such as Outlook Express), and click the Apply button, then re-select "Windows Live Mail". Then go to the following location and ensure "Windows Live Mail" (which is really for Windows Live Hotmail) is selected: [right-click] Start button->Properties->Start Menu [tab]->[check] "Start menu"->Customize [button]->General [tab]->Show on Start menu [section]->E-mail: As for Microsoft Outlook not listed in Add or Remove Programs, it is probably part of a 'Microsoft Office' suite, so look for 'Microsoft Office...' listed. Highlight 'Microsoft Office...' and click on the 'Change' button, then select 'Add or Remove Features'. You will then find Outlook listed in the programs and features list. You can select the 'Repair' option instead of 'Change' if you need to repair any part of your Office suite (such as Outlook). In regard to Outlook Express, I get the impression you have never used it. Outlook Express is an e-mail and news client that comes pre-installed with XP. It is unrelated to Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook. Outlook Express is not directly listed in 'Add or Remove Programs', but is found listed (as Earle indicated) in a subsection of it called 'Add/Remove Windows Components', so you need to select that option and use the wizard that appears to find Outlook Express listed. In any case, I suggest you follow Gary's recommendation and install 'Windows Live Mail', which is Microsoft's replacement for Outlook Express. You will then have an excellent e-mail and news client, which can also access your Hotmail account. It can be found at http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview Note that those "Windows Live Mail" entries I referred to that are actually for "Windows Live Hotmail", will be corrected to "Windows Live Hotmail" upon installation of Windows Live Mail. -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Navyguy" <magineeer@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:d148e617-8863-44ba-84e1-07b4a2adace4@xxxxxx Quote: > On Apr 12, 4:24 pm, "Earle Horton" <earleh_nosp...@xxxxxx> wrote: Quote: >> <robertmi...@xxxxxx> wrote in message >> >> news:#3#DzDNnIHA.5160@xxxxxx >> Quote: >> > "Navyguy" <magine...@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:f370838d-61f9-4229-a547-50a368259815@xxxxxx Quote: Quote: Quote: >> >>I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2 with DSL connection and 160GB hard drive with 132GB of free memory.
