Is Outlook Express masquerading as Outlook Express

I just had WLM crash - sent crash report to MS.

But then I got a Dialogue Box with "Outlook Express" in title bar, an
exclamation mark on a yellow triangle; some text -- "To free up disk
space, Outlook Express can compact messages, this may take a while";
and OK and Cancel buttons - I pressed cancel.

I do not nor have I ever run Outlook "anything" on this system, in
fact the only mail client that has ever run on this compter following
a full system rebuild is Live Mail.

WLM crashed when I tried to open a JPG attachment from a trusted
source, restarted WLM and all OK, I think I;m going to have to get
another gig of memory this Live stuff is pretty sluggish.

Re: Is Outlook Express masquerading as Outlook Express - additional info

I now get the dialogue box every time I start WLM - so far I've answer
No - concerned it will Google my mail.

Re: Is Outlook Express masquerading as Outlook Express - additional info

You must have XP.
Outlook Express is still on your computer. Check if msimn.exe is a running
process.
Check before you try starting WLM.
Check the WLM shortcut. Is it
"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" ?

yep its XP, WLM shortcut is OK

But Task Manager has been disabled by the administrator, I asked why
and he denied doing it, I can't argue with him 'cos him is I?

So I loaded up SysInt's Process Explorer - couldn't see msimn.exe.

Also selected option to replace Task Mangler with Process Explorer,
strangely it will come up with a Ctrl/Alt/Del but the task bar context
menu still has Task Manager greyed out.

This feels very virusy to me -- bloody cat -- I'm off to the xp
group.

Re: Is Outlook Express masquerading as Outlook Express - additional info

I worked on a computer this week that had Task Manager grayed out.
Several anti-spam, registry checking programs had installed themselves.

Malware can "install itself", if the user is lax. Otherwise, programs,
including malware, must be consciously installed by the user.

There a new breed of malware that can install itself through Flash, simply
by going to a web page:

Gary, can you conform that the link you posted is the place to get info on the parasite and not the place to get the
parasite itself -- I'm a bit paranoid at the moment

My guess is that's what it was - I use Flashblock so flash items are not auto displayed in FF.

The other day I struck a site, purportedly related to OOo, that had not much more than a a flash video, I clicked on
Flashblocks play and the video didn't do any thing sensible so I closed the window.

The site came high up, but below sponsored links, on an MS Live search for "openoffice ??????" but I can't remember what
the ????? was. Could have been Writer's Tools as I was trying to get it working about then, which it now is. At the
time I wondered whether MS might have "planted" the seemingly useless site in the search, but I actually don't believe
they would. I'd set my default to to Live search because Google decided I was a shopaholic, whereas I am in fact a
shopaphobic.

Someone else has posted a thread in m.p.w.xpbasics with Task Manager problem.

My IE is behaving badly, cant close tabs, and another program "Belarc Adviser" is causing the spurious Outlook Express
dialogue box - I am now 99.5% certain it's malware.

I wont post anymore here as it is clearly not a WLM issue.

Yes, the link I posted was merely a place to get more information
about the new malware threat.
