Using Mail Rules in WLM

Hello - I'm guessing there's not a way to do this, but before I wrote it off,
figured I'd check.

Is there a way to setup rules that don't run when mail comes in? For
example, I'd like to delete any email that's older than 01/01/2008 in a given
folder. I guess I could have it continually check or at least check once,
but didn't even see a way to do anything based on a date.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

You can use the "Apply now" feature of message rules. It requires
you to manually select the folder(s) you want the rule applied to.
The automatic rule operation works only on new incoming messages.

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

OK, that gets me a bit closer. But what about being able to work with
messages based on dates, or how about being able to select more than one
condition or action?

Simply sort your mail by date by clicking on the column heading. Then
highlight the first message you want to delete and hold the delete key down.
Every message from the current to the end of the list will be deleted as
long as you keep holding the delete key down.

Seems pretty easy to me but maybe I'm misunderstanding your problem.

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

The quickest way to learn what is possible with the built-in ruleset
is to play with it and try different things. You can select multiple
conditions and actions, but none are based on dates.

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

Let's say I want to delete emails from Bob who is in 12 different folders
when his emails are older than 01/01/2008 and the subject contains "Client
X".

Sure, if it was just in one folder, it'd be pretty easy. But since as the
other person verified, there's no date capability.

Outlook has date capability, not for rules but to archive old messages. For
the kind of deletion you are asking about, you are better off using WLM's
sort facilities, such as they are, and deleting the relevant messages by
date and topic manually. It does sound like a one time only task, and why
have a rule for a one time action? It would be more trouble to program a
rule than to just do it.

Cheers,

Earle

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

Gotcha! AFAIK, it's not doable in OE or WLM 'cuz there are no date
parameters to work with.

It could be done programmatically by opening each message stored in eml
format. You can get the date sent, from name, etc. and keep or delete the
message. Not saying it's easy but it's doable.

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

Like I said before, deleting all messages from before dd/mm/yyyy is a one
time operation, just as easy in the long run to do it as to program it. Did
you notice that "Quick Views", right click, "Select quick views..." lets you
select "All e-mail" to view in one pane? You can then sort any way you want
and delete or keep according to that.

Cheers,

Earle

Re: Using Mail Rules in WLM

You have precisely this kind of filter in Edit > Find (Ctrl-Shift-F). Ctrl-A
and Del, and they're all gone. Much quicker than "Apply now" with a Message
rule. This is one good reason for using Storage folders instead of
account-specific ones to archive messages in, because you can apply a Find
filter to all storage folders in one go. Don't forget, also, that Message
rules only work with POP accounts.
