I was wondering if its possible for me to close windows live mail, but I can
still see the mail icon in the bar next to the clock don't know what its
called.
If not that would really be a huge improvement!
Thanks in advantage,

That area is called the Notification Area.
To make WLM keep an icon there when the program is "closed", just
right-click on the icon, and select (put a checkmark in front of)
"Hide window when Inbox is minimized"

either running, or it is not.
Some IM programs are "ill-behaved", and don't actually "close" when you
"X-close" them; but that is poor behavior. Closing a program should do just
that.
Some other programs offer an option to minimize to the System Notification
Area (a.k.a., "System Tray"), that area adjacent to the system clock.
Windows Live Mail is one of them. With WLM open, there should be an envelope
icon in the System Tray. Right click on the envelope, and select the "Hide
window when Inbox is minimized" option. Now, when you minimize WLM (the '-'
button upper right), you will only see the envelope in the System Tray; no
tab in the Taskbar.
