Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

Hi. Win XP SP2, IE7, all the updates are installed. McAfee internet security
running. No viruses...hmmm...well, that is about it. Here is my problem...I
installed Windows live Mail and it works just fine. All the users from
Outlook express were imported perfectly. It works very fast! When I click on
the icon to run the program, a box pops up saying this..."The procedure entry
point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link library
Msvcrt.dll". I click "OK" and it begins to start and the same message box
pops up and I click "ok" again and then Win Live Mail opens up. What can I do
to fix this DLL problem? Thanks in advance!

Try it with McAfee uninstalled.

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

OK. I tried what you said. No luck. Here is an interesting thing I noticed,
From the Windows Live Installer, there is a link to "start mail". When I
click on it, no message like I posted earlier pops up, but when I click on
the icon on the desktop or the quick launch bar, the message box appears. It
is an annoyance that I would like to fix, but it still functions like it
should. Wacky.....

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

I think you might have a problem with your msvcrt.dll (MSVCRT stands for MS Visual C++ Runtimes).
Probably due to the original Msvcrt.dll being replaced by a third party program, although System File Protection should have prevented that.

This article explains how to restore the original Msvcrt.dll from your Windows XP CD: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324762

Or use Start->Run: "sfc /scannow"

I believe 7.0.2600.2180 is the latest version number for the XP SP2 version of msvcrt.dll

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

I'm fairly hesitant to use sfc /scannow, for the following reason. If I am
incorrect please advise.

SFC will check the system files for integrity. If it finds a suspect file,
it will replace it with a good file. No problem with this so far. However,
where is this correct file coming from? The version of XP I have on CD is
SP2 that is 3 years old. Several system files have been updated over the
years when you do a windows update. If the replaced file is off of the CD
you have an good file, yet possibly a older version that was updated during
a hotfix.

Unless I have it wrong, that is why I do not use SFC.

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

I understand your hesitancy, as prior to Windows 200 SP4, that was indeed a problem. But my research tells me that any Microsoft updates to protected files should update the copy of that file in C:WINDOWS\System32\Dllcache, and SFC will look in the DLLCache before it looks in the "I386" folder on the XPSP2 CD.

Here is a helpful article about SFC: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

In any case, create a System Restore Point and maybe a backup image of your OS beforehand for some peace of mind.

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

Well, I did a clean install of windows and all was fine. Did my backups of
the system after software installations. No issues. I installed the Windows
Live Mail since Microsoft is forcing us to do so and guess what? Thae same
error message pops up! Looks like it isn't me, but Microsoft that has the
problem. I tried the "sfc /scannow" program and it still has the window pop
up. I am running Zone Alarm after ditching MaCafee. Strange stuff.

Did you run the cleanup program often needed to take care of what the McAfee
uninstall often forgets to do:

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

No. McAfee wasn't installed. It was a fresh installation of Windows XP SP2
with all the updates. Any more ideas as to what could be bringing up this
message? Thanks for all your guy's help!

Re: Msvcrt.dll error message after installing Win Live Mail....

Yes, strange indeed Darth, this is the first time I have heard of such an error with Windows Live Mail.

It has been suggested that the installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package can solve such errors. The x86 Windows version can be downloaded from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Failing that, I suggest you open a support ticket at: https://support.live.com/eform.aspx?...ail&ct=eformts
