Rules import fine from OE but don't work in WLM!

I recently installed WLM on my Win XP machine. I was able to successfully
import folders, emails and rules from Outlook Express to WLM. I've been using
rules with OE for years quite successfully. But now those same rules no
longer work in WLM, even though I am doing everything the same with WLM as I
did with OE.

For example, I download then move all my emails from my IMAP accounts to a
Temp Sort folder under the local 'Storage Folders'. I then click on
Tools->Message Rules->Mail->Apply Now. I select the rule I want to apply. I
then click on Browse and select the Temp Sort folder and then click Apply Now.

What should happen after the above is that particular emails are moved from
Temp Sort folder to the folder specified in the rule. But the emails stay
put! I double check the rule and it is fine. It imported exactly from OE with
everything intact. I try applying different rules, all rules, and nothing
moves. I checked the dozens of rules one by one and they read exactly as they
did in OE. So I then went back to OE just to double check and these same
rules work to sort the exact same messages in OE without any problem.

How do I get the rules to work in WLM? Or is it some kind of bug that is
going to force me to rewrite every single rule again?!

RE: Rules import fine from OE but don't work in WLM!

As a test, I wrote a couple of rules from scratch in WLM and tried applying
them and they don't work. Very simple rules, like if the From line contains
johnsmith@xxxxxx then move to John Smith folder. Applying a rule like
that to an email in my Temp Sort folder that clearly has
johnsmith@xxxxxx in the from address does absolutely nothing! This is
bizzare.

If you wrote a couple of rules in WLM you should have noticed a message that
said you can't do it in WLM for http accounts only pop.

Yes. I realize that. I am not writing rules for http accounts. As mentioned,
I download all my imap emails and place them in a local folder, then write
rules for that local folder in order to sort into other folders. That's what
I used to do in OE and should, in theory, be able to also do in WLM - but it
ain't working in WLM.

Sorry, thought you were trying to create rules for http. WLM doesn't do
rules for http OR imap, only POP

Re: Rules import fine from OE but don't work in WLM!

Zoop, I'm making a wild guess here. What happens if you restart
WLMail (giving it a time to settle down after closing before opening
it again - if you have an animated AV icon showing, wait till it
stops, for example) and then try Apply now on your rules?
I say this because, although the messages may have been physically
moved to your storage folder, the move has probably not yet been
registered in the MessageStore database. When you Apply now, the app
might be looking for messages to apply the rule to in the database
version and failing to find them - because they're not there. I
think the changes recorded in temp files (moves, flags etc) are
first written to the database when you close down.
Worth a try, at any rate, and I haven't got time just now to test
this theory.

I would expect that rules manually applied to the local storage folders
should work; regardless of the account type that the messages came from.

Tried that, but didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: Rules import fine from OE but don't work in WLM!

Ozgirl,
The op stated:
"I download all my imap emails and place them in a local folder, then write rules for that local folder"

Which should function fine assuming the rules are correct and processed in the proper sequence and stopped to avoid an
additional/later rule from acting.

Re: Rules import fine from OE but don't work in WLM!

You are absolutely correct that the rules do not work. After reading your
message, I tested a new rule in WLM - to delete a newsletter - not on an
HTTP/Hotmail account, and it simply did not work. I pointed it to the
"inbox" of the account WLM chose to automatically import all my unsorted OE
Inbox messages to and the rule did not delete the message. The newsletter
remained. I then executed the rule against the Storage Folder, and again,
it simply did not work. I am not sure where WLM needs the rule pointed to
in order to find the newsletter and execute the rule properly. If this is
the behavior of WLM using rules, then I'm better off staying with OE since
it handles rules exceptionally well and the reason I use rules extensively.
