Problem sending from deault e-mail account.

I have been using Windows Live Mail Desktop for some time and it has been
brilliant. In the last couple of weeks a problem has developed.

I have three e-mail accounts:
(1) My main account - POP3 - set as the default
(2) A second POP3 account from my broadband provider
(3) A hotmail account

Until recently everythig has been OK, mail has downloaded from all accounts
and it has been possible to send mail from all three accounts.

The problem now is that all outgoing mail is now going out from account (2)
even though (1) is the default and that account is the one selected in the
window at top right of the screen. This not only applies to new mail but
also to a reply to mail which has been correctly received into inbox for
account (1). If hotmail is selected as the originating account that mail is
correctly sent as having originated from that account.

Any suggestions for a solution will be welcome.

Is a copy of all sent mail going to account 2 Sent Items?

Re: Problem sending from deault e-mail account.

Have you changed your default account at some stage? Or used any
sort of registry cleaner or anti-spyware program that might fiddle
with registry keys? Just occasionally, settings like that that are
stored in the registry fail to stick and have to be kick started. I
hadn't heard of this particular one, though. Try setting your
Hotmail account as default, restarting WLMail [no desktop, I hope]
and then changing it back to the one you want.

You write about "the [account] selected in the window at top right
of the screen." That sounds like the Live ID you sign in with, which
has nothing to do with your mail except that it might coincide with
one of the accounts you have set up. Read about signing in in Help.

Re: Problem sending from deault e-mail account.

The default behavior is that replies will use whatever account downloaded
the original message, while a new message uses the 'From' address
associated with the currently selected account folder. Both of those
defaults can be overridden by using the dropdown in the 'From' box.

Sometimes WLM loses track of which account a message is associated
with. I'm not sure what causes that, but my suspicion is third party
antivirus and anti-spam programs. I seem to recall we recently heard from
someone with a similar problem that turned out to be caused by Kaspersky
antivirus.

Re: Problem sending from deault e-mail account.

I am afraid that Ildhunds' suggestion did not work.

When sending a message the correct account is selected in the dropdown box
in the new message window. It seems to be just the account number (1) which
suffers from this. Account (3), which is hotmail, sends correctly. All other
messages go out from account (2) whatever I do.

I am using Norton internet security as antivirus. This has not changed
during the time that this problem started to appear.

For information the file version of Windows Live Mail is 12.0.1616.1023

Re: Problem sending from deault e-mail account.

Sounds like the accounts may be corrupted. I would delete accounts
(1) and (2), restart WLM, then recreate those accounts.
Warning, WLM deletes all folders associated with an account when
the account is deleted, so move any mail you want saved to a Storage
folder.

Re: Problem sending from deault e-mail account.

Thank you all for your assistance. Having eliminated all other possibilities
- including installing accounts from scratch on a second computer - it looked
like a problem with my broadband provider. In fact it turns out that my
provider has removed the option to send e-mails from third party accounts.
Thus, no solution unfortunately but I do now understand the position.
