Compact Database on Shutdown

Everytime that Compact Database on Shutdown appears, it fails with the
message that another program is using the database so it can't proceed. If I
compact the database manually, there isn't a problem. Does anyone have any
suggestion on how to find out what is interferring or how to fix this as
there is nothing running that would use the database other than WLM?

Could it possibly be the email checker in AVG?

Try disabling "signing in" on the Options/connections tab. Then close WLM,
open it, set the compact database frequency to 1, and close WLM. After the
database is compacted open WLM, enable "signing in", and change the
frequency for compacting to something other than 1 (or it will ask you every
time you close the app). This works consistently for me in Vista x86.

Re: Compact Database on Shutdown

Hi Ron P.

There is a database compaction bug in the current version of Windows live mail (12.0.1606). It is evident when closing WLMail after using newsgroups, in particular I believe, after downloading and opening several news posts.

The workaround that I have been using successfully is to re-open WLMail after the failed compaction, and *immediately* (before doing anything else) going to Tools->Options...->Advanced [tab]->Maintenance [button]->check the option "Compact the database on shutdown every 'n' runs" and change the value 'n' to '1'. Then *immediately* exit WLMail and select "Yes" when asked to "Recover unused disk space".

Also, going Offline before closing WLMail, is also an effective workaround for me, meaning I don't have to close WLMail *immediately* after changing the value 'n' to '1' etc. as long as I go Offline in WLMail before closing it.

However, signing out has never been an effective workaround for me.

Once the database compaction succeeds, you can return the 'n' value back to its normal number.

Unfortunately, I am already not signing in, so I can't disable it as you
suggest.

It sounds like it could work though.

Now, that seems to have worked. I will have to try and remember that for the
future if I happen to need it again.

Thanks

You can happily tell AVG to stop scanning email - it doesn't give
any added protection and might interfere. One thing to try (apart
from the suggestions already made in this thread) is next time you
close down WLMail and the box appears asking if you want to recover
unused disk space, leave it on the screen and go make some coffee.
When you come back, click Yes and hope for the best. It can take
WLMail quite some time to do its housekeeping after you shut it
down, and this would generate the error if it hasn't finished.

[Please remember to specify your OS when asking a question here. The
answer - if there is one - might not be the same for XP and Vista.]

Re: Compact Database on Shutdown

Any antivirus should have its email scanning disabled. See

and

I'll keep that in mind.....about the waiting that is but usually I'm
shutting the computer down for the day when this occurs.

Turning off the email scan is something that I have played with. I find the
icon in the notification tray somewhat annoying.

I see on the AVG site that the free version of AVG 8.0 has been released but
I was unsuccessful in finding the download. It must be one of the downloads
offered but it seems to be a crap shoot as to which one it is.

The scanning of email does seem to be redundant doens't it.
