Just Switched from OE to WLMail

Hi, I just switched from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail since I am a
Hotmail user and they say OE will not support Hotmail in the future. Anyway,
while I was an OE user, if in word (for example) and I selected File -> Send
to.., I would get an option to send to a Mail Recipient. Now that WLMail is
my Default email, I no longer get that option. Has anyone else noticed this?
Has anyone found a hack which will give me that option again? Or is this
something else I've lost by going to WLMail? Thanks.

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

I checked and it's gone from my Word too.

Also, when I right-click the Desktop and select a New Email Message the
OE entry has been replaced by "Windows Live Mail Mail Message" but
clicking that opens the Outlook Express new mail window.

Go to Start: Set Program Access and Defaults
Expand the Custom field and choose WLM from there.

See if this applies:

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

Well, Michael, MAYBE it applies. I'm not sure yet. Do you think those
registry settings (in step 2) apply to WLMail (or just to Outlook)? I notice
there are 2 DLL's (mapi.dll and mapi32.dll) which are not on my machine, I
searched the hard drive, including system and hidden files. I have a number
of other mapi dll's, like smapi.dll and sgmapi.dll, but not the specific two
listed in step 2. I tried just applying step 3, but the desired menu items
are grayed out, so I assume I need some sort of registry changes. What do
you think? Thanks.

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

You didn't mention what version of Office you are running.

Do you have the registry settings as mentioned in the article?

On my XP SP2 PC, both Mapi dlls are in C:\WINDOWS\system32\

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

If I may ask...
Vista or XPSp2 ?
Office 03 or Office 07 ?
Is Outlook installed ?
If XP Look in Internet Explorer\Properties\Programs\Email for the default email client
- What items available items are in the drop down box ?
Close IE
XP and Vista: Look in this registry key(How many items clients are present ?)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail
- If Hotmail is present, Click on Hotmail(what is the value in the default string in the right hand pane ?)
If it says Windows Live Mail in the Hotmail key, change it to Windows Live Hotmail

Please answer the questions and report back if you changed the item above

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

Hi Michael. I'm running Office 2003. No, I do not have any of those registry
settings listed in Method 2 of kbid=834008. I also have XP SP2, and,
contrary to what I said earlier, I DO have mapi32.dll in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\, but not mapi.dll, although I've got a number of .dll's
with mapi in the name, like mapistub, sfmapi, imapi.exe and imapi.sys(not
dll's). I don't have any idea if they are replacements for mapi.dll or not.
Should I download mapi.dll from MS (or elsewhere), and then make those
registry changes shown in Method 2? Thanks.
Larry

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

I have Office 2002 and have all those registry settings. So I'd
recommend that you add them. I'm guessing that you are missing the keys
rather than having them with some other setting. If they have another
setting, note the current values so that you can go back, just in case.

If like, you can send me an e-mail, and I'll e-mail you the missing DLL.

Re: Just Switched from OE to WLMail

Hi Winston. XP SP2, Office 2003, I've never used Outlook. Would it be listed
separately in CP, Add/Remove? If so, then No, it's not installed, but I do
notice there's an Update for Outlook 2003, (KB943649), OLKINTL listed in
Add/Remove under Office 2003. How do I know for sure if it's installed?
Under Tools>Internet Options>Programs, Default email shows WLMail, but
dropdown also shows WLHotmail and OE. In
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\ there is no Mail key, so I exited,
changing nothing. Thanks.
