Sometimes when I Send/Receive I get a message saying it can't connect to the
internet and asks me if I want to work offline or retry. Usually one retry is
sufficient for it to work. This is an intermittent problem.

That could be caused by your Internet connection. What type of
connection do you have?
I get that error about once a week. My laptop connects to the
home router via Wi-Fi, and when I get the error, the connection icon
in the system tray has indeed turned red. It's a momentary thing.
How frequently does your issue happen?

I have an ethernet cable going directly into my router. This problem does not
happen in Outlook Express. It only happens in Windows Live Mail. I check my
mail around 10 times a day and the problem occurs around 3 times a day.
Whilst the error message is displayed I can toggle into Internet Explorer or
Skype or Outlook Express for example. They all work perfectly and don't show
any problem.

Don't know what it could be then. WLM doesn't complain about
my connection unless there is actually something wrong with
the connection.

I had a similar problem which I have now resolved.
You could try the following:
For each of your email accounts, open the "Connection" tab
(Tools/Accounts/Properties) and check "Always connect to this account using"
and select "Local Area Network" from the drop-down list and select OK or
Apply.
For some reason WLM seems to "lose" or "forget" how it connects from time to
time, unless you do this .
Hope this helps

Thanks Paul, I've now done that and will wait to see if it helps.
