| | Spell checker in Windows Live Mail Win XP (SP2) IE7 Outlook Express 6 Windows Live Mail 2008 (v 12.0.1606) Microsoft Office Professional 2000 I use Outlook Express as my default email utility. I use OE to access email accounts on POP3/SMTP mail servers, as well as "grandfathered" Hotmail/MSN accounts on an HTTP server. Following the announcement by Microsoft that I will no longer be able to use OE to access Hotmail/MSN accounts, I have installed Windows Live Mail. (Hotmail & MSN are the only accounts on Live Mail - and I shall continue to use Outlook Express for POP3/SMTP accounts.) Outlook Express uses the spell checker from Microsoft Office / Word 2000. My default spell checker is English (UK). I notice that the available languages in Windows Live Mail are Korean, German, English (United States), Spanish and French. I know the US competes with Microsoft for world dominance. However, I live in the UK - so I would prefer to use British spellings. Is it possible to install an English (UK) spell checker, for use with Windows Live Mail? |

You may have to wait a few hours for someone who knows where to find it to tell you where to find it. |

| | Re: Spell checker in Windows Live Mail Not hidden - the English lexicon delivered with WLMail includes (at least) US, Canadian and British variants, with the US set selected as default. Find spell.ini in %programfiles%\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2\ and open it with Notepad. Change 1033 to 2057, save and close. If you want more languages, look at http://www.microsoft.com/communities...dd7&sloc=en-us -- Noel <robertmiles@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:#1$PlYprIHA.3456@xxxxxx Quote: > > "Bob Lucas" <bob@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:fvmjpe$7ep$1@xxxxxx Quote: >> Win XP (SP2) >> IE7 >> Outlook Express 6 >> Windows Live Mail 2008 (v 12.0.1606) >> Microsoft Office Professional 2000 >> >> I use Outlook Express as my default email utility. | | Re: Spell checker in Windows Live Mail Many thanks. That has sorted the problem. Even though the list of languages (in Tools/ Options) still thinks the installed spell-checker is English (United States) , it provides British spellings (i.e. neighbour, instead of neighbor and colour, instead of color). Very different from Outlook Express - which allows the user to select spelling variants from a menu. | | Re: Spell checker in Windows Live Mail Further experimentation confirms that the default spell checker in the Live Mail Menu is English (United States), which resides at %programfiles%\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2\ The spell checkers for all additional languages reside at %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Proof\prf00xx\1 - where "xx" defines the name of the language. I have established that the following "xx" variables relate to: "0A" = Spanish (Traditional Sort) "0C" = French (France) "07" = German (Germany) Further experimenting suggests that the following "xx" codes add the following language names to the Windows Live Mail spell check menu: "01" = Arabic (Saudi Arabia) "02" = Bulgarian "03" = Catalan "04" = Chinese (Taiwan) "05" = Czech "06" = Danish "08" = Greek "0B" = Finnish "19" = Russian I am trying to identify the "xx" code that adds English (United Kingdom) to the list of languages in the spell check menu. This would allow me to use the Tools / Options / Spelling menu to select English (United Kingdom) OR English (United States) - without having to edit the spell.ini file. Does anyone know the correct "xx" code for English (United Kingdom)?
