| Cannot open .eml extensions I receive emails with a bla bla bla._._eml extensions in WLM and when I try to open it says it doesn't have a program associated with it. I looked at the file ext and it is associated with Outlook. It doesnt even start Outlook. If I start Outlook I can view the email no problem. This is the only quirk I have left with WLM and after that I can stop using OE. |

| Re: Cannot open .eml extensions I am running XP, here is everything I know that might be pertinent Is there an association for .eml files. It should be associated with Internet E-Mail Message and show Opens with Windows Live Mail The command for open should be something like (between the shes) -"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /eml:%1- Make sure the association works. Assuming you are using the default location then your emails are in folders within "C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail" folder - they will have names you recognise (email account names, Storage Folders etc) - double click on an .eml file in one of those folders and you should see it in a WLM message window. If that works and .elm attachments don't, save one of the attachments to your desktop and double click it. If that works and double clicking on it in the mailing list attachment doesn't then WLM has a problem. I am guessing that the mail with the eml attachments(s) comes from a mailing list - it is possible that you can assess that mailing list in another, and IMO, better manner - many mailing lists are archived as Newsgroups, in which case you need to to know which server they are on - one such is news,gmane.org, its an open server and is fairly quick, the relationship between the mailing list and the newsgroup names is sometimes less than obvious, but not to the extent of absurdity. Have a look to see if your mailing list is on there, because it is the archive you can look back in time and you can search the archive (only the headers unless you download all the bodies too). If you find your mailing list archive as a News Group then you might want consider to unsubscribing from the mailing list in preference of using the newsgroup. -- TUT __________________________________ From: "Craig" <Craig@xxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:11 AM Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop Subject: Cannot open .eml extensions

| Re: Cannot open .eml extensions "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /VCard %1. This is what the association is for .eml and I created a new 1 called _eml. When I saved the email to my desktop, that was the extension(_eml). Now it won't open in OE. I can change it back but does not resolve the issue with WLM. "Ron Sommer" wrote:

| Re: Cannot open .eml extensions The underscore shouldn't be there. The file name should end Dot E M L. You are running into problem with forwarded messages where the subject ends in a period. When saving the forwarded message, WLM is adding the underscore that shouldn't be there. Rename file without the underscore. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Craig" <Craig@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A035A07F-8671-429E-8257-8777C40A6E64@xxxxxx

| Re: Cannot open .eml extensions Michael, I don't believe that it's WLM that's putting the underscore into the attached file name. I know of a mailing list product that creates "digests" consisting of multiple email attachments, the extension name for the attachment is ._eml. I have no idea why the underscore is there. It's been around for years and even though it's a discontinued product it still enjoys widespread use in the UnixSphere. Perhaps in some circumstances the attachments do not fully comply with the definition for .eml files, so they used an underscore prefix as a means of letting people know that its more or less eml. -- TUT __________________________________ "Michael Santovec" <michael_santovec@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:e7UNxzWtIHA.4528@xxxxxx
