Did you set them up in WLMail, or did they get migrated from Windows Mail? When you say 'nothing worked', what do you mean? What kind of rule doesn't work? Are you talking about rules applied to incoming messages or applied to already received messages? Rules have to be applied stringently, because they operate according to strict logic. The things people often get wrong are the order rules are applied in, not using 'Stop processing more rules' to avoid conflicts, and not being precise about, for example, what should be found in the From: field for a rule to be applied. If you post back with samples of the rules that don't work, someone may be able to help you get them right. -- Noel |

| | Re: message rules don't work Assuming you've created all the necessary message rules properly in WLM.... - Are these incoming mail messages, existing messages(if so where are they currently located, and to which location should their final resting place be[email folders, storage folder subfolders etc) ? -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "onno" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:72ed0ab08fe4804d822cf88adc748ccf@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Vista Home Premium 32bit sp1 | Re: message rules don't work I have the same problem but I can identify the actual behaviour: WLM does not read the email address in the From line it only reads the name tag the person has chosen, eg Fred Smith will be read, but not fredsmith@someserver.com. It is frustrating because all my rules were set up to read the email address not the name. Furthermore, websites like Facebook have many applications that identify themselves with the app name in the From line and use the standard format apps+[appid]@facebookmail.com for the email address. Therefore adding a rule for "@facebookmail.com" sorted them all into the same folder. Not any more... Any clues as to what has happened? ![]() Oh yes: when you create a new rule for a contact and add the contact from within the Select People>Contacts bit, the email address is added but not the name. Very helpful... |

| | Re: message rules don't work BUG: When Manually applying a mail Message Rule criteria Where From Contains 'X'. A From header can be of two forms: 1) From: Name <e-mail address> 2) From: e-mail address When Manually applied, the rule does NOT check the e-mail address in form #1 within the < >. It will match the e-mail address in form #2. And it will match if checking for Name. The rule works perfectly when automatically applied to incoming POP3 message. It will match on the e-mail address in the <>. The bug just appears to be with the From header. Testing on the To and Cc headers when Manually applying rules works fine. I've reported this bug to Microsoft and it has been escalated up several levels. I'm hoping this will be fixed in the next release of WLM, but have not heard anything definite back. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "IainADMcIntyre" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:81ca4791ac71ab48bacf370087277c99@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | | Re: message rules don't work Hi, Iain. Rather than use Tools | Message Rules | Mail, have you tried highlighting a message from Fred Smith (in your example), then clicking Actions | Create rule from message...? This way, WLM will already have filled in the From line in the Rule, using the format that it understands - and avoiding any typos. You can then add any Move or other instructions, including Stop processing more rules. RC -- R. C.
