Problems of WL Mail with Messenger integration

You know, if you sign in with your same wl id on both wl mail&messenger, then
they become integrated. However there are two problems with this integration
which I noticed:

1- WL Mail grabs WL Messenger's new e-mail alerts.
While Messenger notifies for all e-mails incoming to Hotmail, if wl mail
too is open&signed in at the same time, those alerts are disabled by wl mail.
So we cannot get those alerts at the instant new emails drop our Hotmail
account which we are used to from old messenger days. WL Mail displays its
own texts in Messenger's toast windows _only_ when it automatically downloads
some emails only in _Inboxes_ of configured accounts in wl mail. But if you
automatically sort your incoming e-mails in different custom folders in wl
hotmail, then wl mail cannot use wl messenger's toast windows even if it
downloads those email messages. Also if it doesn't downlaod the full message
but only their headers, there is no way to get an alert about those new
emails from either wl messenger or wl mail even if they are in _Inbox_ folder
of Hotmail. I hate this problem because I want to be notified instantly by my
messenger whenever I receive a new e-mail to my hotmail. But I don't want to
exit wl mail in order to get these instant alerts from my messenger. I want
to keep both open while using my computer.

2- WL Mail cannot be started correctly from WL Messenger's new e-mail alerts.
If my WL Mail is not open while my Messenger is open and signed in, the
new e-mail toast windows of Messenger appear correctly and instantly. However
if I click on them, my WL Mail cannot be started and it gives an error.
However if I stop signing in to wl mail, then the toast window for new e-mail
opens Windows Live Hotmail by using Internet Explorer and it displays that
new email. But I don't like this because I don't like to have a new browser
window by downloading all its contenct for each new e-mail. That is why I
like "signing in wl mail" but for this reason it gives more headache instead
its usefulness.

Please fix these two problems as soon as you can.

Re: Problems of WL Mail with Messenger integration

Some good points ahmetgns.

However, I do not get an error message as you described in point 2. Windows Live Mail does take its time (20s) to sign in and open the new message when I click on the WLMessenger's new e-mail Toast, but it does open without error.

What error message do you get? Do you get the same error when you use the 'Open your e-mail inbox' icon in WLMessenger to open WLMail?

Re: Problems of WL Mail with Messenger integration

I get this error on my two computers whenever I click the new e-mail toast
alert of Messenger. WL Mail looks like as if it is signing in but then a
warning box saying

"An error occured to open this message.

An error occured."

appears. Then I click on ok button and a new warning window appears again
and says

"Windows Live Mail could not be started because Msmail.dll could not be
initiated. Windows Live Mail may not be loaded properly." (These may not
reflect the original texts, I'm translating them from Turkish)

I press on OK again in that window and I have to start WLMail manually. Of
course at this time, this is a normal start of WLMail and I cannot directly
go to that new email.

WLMail 12.0.1606 (Turkish)
WLMessenger 8.5.1302.1018 (Turkish) (Add-ons: Messenger Plus! Live 4.60)

I don't get any problem when I use mail button of messenger, even a menu
item from messenger: "Send other>Send an email". This item opens wlmail's
"tyep a new email window" with that person's address in "To:" part
successfully.

Re: Problems of WL Mail with Messenger integration

I trust/hope you didn't install the sponsor program that is offered with 'Messenger Plus! Live'.

I do know that someone did have the same problem as you and bugged it at Microsoft Connect. However, I don't have the problem on either my Vista or my XP machine.

I was thinking maybe WLMail is just timing out for you, but on my slow old XP machine, WLMail takes 50 seconds to successfully sign into WL through WLMail and download/open a small test e-mail after clicking on the WLMessenger Toast.

If you want to try to resolve the issue, I would suggest you try a *complete* uninstall/reinstall of WLMail, as described below.

Complete uninstall:

1. After backing up your messages & accounts through the export options, uninstall Windows Live Mail through Control Panel.

2. Now use Regedit (or your favourite registry editor) to delete the registry Keys (if they exist)*

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop

3. Now navigate to your WLMail Message Store folder** and rename it (so you can keep it as a backup - messages can be dragged from the message store to your WLMail interface as a method of importing them, or you can import messages directly from your old Messages Store through File->Import->Messages...->Windows Live Mail->Browse... [button] to your old Windows Live Mail Message Store folder. Also, if any extra spellchecking languages have been installed, or you want to re-use your custom dictionary, then the contents of the "Proof" folder (within the default location Storage Folder) should be backed up so you can restore it after the reinstall. Furthermore, after the reinstall, if inclined, you could try putting your old Message Store back in place by renaming it again).

4. Go to the 'Windows Live Mail' 'Program Files' folder (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) and delete it.

5. Run Windows Live Beta Remover*** if necessary.

6. Reboot your computer.

7. Now install WLMail and import your accounts and messages. It may be best to disable any antivirus program you are running while installing WLM and running it for the first time.

*Note that because the registry key is deleted, messages, accounts, and message rules will be imported again from Outlook Express/Windows Mail, so if you do not want this to happen, first delete them from those redundant mail clients.

**To find the location of your message store, go: Tools->Options...->Advanced [tab]->Maintenance->Store Folder (the default location is a hidden folder). If you have moved your Storage Folder from its default location, you should also rename the old Storage Folder which remains in the default location.

The default location of Windows Live Mail's Message Store is:

Vista: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Users\<Windows user account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

XP: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Documents and Settings\<windows user account>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

***The Windows Live Beta Remover may be helpful if you have installed Windows Live beta programs previously, as it removes all the old beta installers.

Re: Problems of WL Mail with Messenger integration

Thank you very much for trying to help and for your long reply but if you
wrote all those uninstall instructions for only me (not copied a standard
instructions reply here), I am sorry but I won't do what you said. Because I
think I discovered the problem on my own. It is neither MsgPlus!'s sponsor,
nor corrupted settings etc.

I created a new Windows account (for a fresh registry etc.) and configured
an account in wl mail with my test account. Then I signed in Messenger as
well, closed wl mail then I sent a test email to that account. I clicked on
the toast and wl mail successfully opened the new mail in its window in 10
seconds. This proves my program files, settings are not corrupted. Then I
removed that account and configured my main account on wl mail. Then I signed
in messenger, closed wl mail and sent a test mail. When I clicked on the
toast, it gave me the same error and it didn't open that email.

Now, I strongly suspect about my custom folders in Hotmail. In my test
account, there is no custom folder, all of them are standard folders. However
main account has 6 or7 custom folders in it. Now I want to ask you about
this? Do you have any custom folder in Hotmail? If not, can you create one,
let wl mail be aware of that folder and save it to your hard disk and close
wl mail. Now sign into messenger, send a test email to yourself and click on
toast. Let me know what happened. Thanks.
