Compacting revisited

After reading these newsgroups via WLM, I was asked if I wanted to reclaim
space. Since I had my Vista computer, I have had to do the trick of shutting
down WLM, open it up without reading newsgroups, set the value to 1 and then
allow the compact to perform at shutdown.
However today I mistakenly selected yes after reading the newsgroups
expecting the 'file in use' error. It did not happen. The compact completed
without error.
The version of WLM is still 12.0.1606.

What has changed? I am on Vista SP1.

Re: Compacting revisited

AFAIK nothing has changed unless there was some form of locking fix put in
with Vista SP1. Nothing has changed on WLM for a while now.

Re: Compacting revisited

The only thing worth noting was that this was the first time I used WLM
after a reboot. Maybe that is the key.

Re: Compacting revisited

No significant differences here with Vista Sp1. As far as I can see, if the wlmail.exe process is released upon exiting WLM, the
compaction will occur properly.

Re: Compacting revisited

I will reduce the frequency from 50 to 5 in the options. Then I can test
further.

Re: Compacting revisited

It turns out that upon setting the value to 1, the 'file in use' error is
there after each shutdown except if it the first time I use WLM after a
reboot.

Re: Compacting revisited

I've seen the file in use error once in a while on XP. When that's
happened, I've had one of the WLM folders open in Windows Explorer.
Might just be a coincidence. What I've done is is move to some non-WLM
folder in Windows Explorer and then opened and closed WLM again. That
time, the compacting has always completed successfully.

Re: Compacting revisited

FWIW Seymour, I'm using XPsp2, and when trying to compact, I ALWAYS (except
maybe after a reboot, I haven't tried that) get a failure to compact, I.e. a
folder is in use error. When I get that error, I reopen WLMail, set to
compact after 1 run, DO NOT OPEN NEWSGROUPS, reclose and it compacts OK,
then I have to remember to reset the compact count next time I open WLMail.
It's a hassle, but it seems to always work. Hope WLMail developers fix it.
