Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder?

As I definitely don't want to create multiple user accounts just in order to
password protect WL Mail, does anyone know about a (free?) software that
would make it compulsory to enter a password when launching wlmail.exe?

Alternatively, I believe that password protecting the folder:
Program Files/Windows Live/Mail
would also do it.

Based on the number of negative user comments regarding the lack of security
of WLM on this forum, I think this would be greatly appreciated by the
community.

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder?

Your concept of 'security' seems to be a lot different than mine.
Even if you could password-protect WLM, how would you prevent
access to non-mail stuff like your Documents and Pictures?
Perhaps you could explain why you need to password-protect WLM only.

In addition to that, Windows Live Mail messages are stored in plain text
files. Anyone with access to your PC can read them without even opening
WLM.

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder

Thank you for your answers, consistent with your other posts on this forum.

For me, Email, like post mail, belongs to the privacy domain.
I would not read a post mail arriving home for somebody else than myself,
except if I have specific orders to do it.

Pictures are shared documents, such as paper-printed pictures that you share
with your family.
Same for word documents, if you want to protect one from other's eyes, you
just attach a password to this word document only in your PC, or store it in
a secret place in your house (no need to lock your whole house for this
purpose).

I understand that WLM files, like OE files, are plain text documents.
However, other persons having access to the computer, may not be experts in
finding where all this is stored.
I just want a first level of protection, like Identities in OE, so as to
discourage any attempt to my privacy.
That was really good enough in OE and having discussed this issue with a
number of other users, it would really be beneficial to password protect the
launch of the WLM software, without being forced to logoff and login all the
time.

I hope that a solution can be found on this issue.

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder

In addition to my previous mail, I just found out that Thunderbird resolved
the same issue, and this would really correspond to the needs (personnaly, I
would prefer changing from OE to WLM, before trying Thunderbird to replace
OE).
Here is the description of the Thunderbird extension:

This extension for Thunderbird can let you protect your profile through a
password.
It must be clear that for the characteristics of Thunderbird, a protection
like this is very tiny and a smart user can bypass it easily.
The type of protection given by this extension is unfit for situations where
it's really important to protect own mails from not authorized people. Anyway
it can be useful in some other situations (i.e. in family).

Features of the extension:
- possibility to have a password request when you open your profile;
- possibility to lock the main window, while Thunderbird is running;
- full localization

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder

If there are multiple users of your computer, there are other reasons
besides privacy for giving the other users a separate user login.
I take it that some of those users are not technically astute, so they
could inadvertently delete important files or make undesired changes.

Do the other users not need their own email access? Depending on
what age they are, they may have that need in the near future.

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder

I understand your point, and I'm not questioning at all the multiple accounts
feature.

However, There are just situations where you just need to protect your Email
access, like your post mail and not protect anything else (pictures,
documents, etc.).

I will continue searching for a piece of software that could password
protect WLM, and test Thunderbird in parallel.
I was quite happy with OE, but due to the new restrictions on the link to
Hotmail accounts on June 30, I need to move to another Email software.
I converted from OE to WLM until I discovered this security issue, and
reverted to OE since.
I hope anyway that MS will create an extension for password protection of
WLM in the future.

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder

If I remember correctly, the new restrictions on Hotmail accounts have
been put off, and should no longer go into effect on that date.

FYI...to add to robert's input..

WebDAV Protocol Deprecation Delayed - Status Update
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com...90CA!222.entry

Responding to Customer Feedback - Disabling DAV

I.e. I would interpret the above as 'not forever' and inevitable.

Re: Software to password protect wlmail.exe or installation folder

Thank you very much for this information.
I will put testing of Thunderbird on hold, keep using OE and move to WLM
once the password issue is resolved.
