how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

I want to stop using OutlookExpress and shift completely to LiveMail. I've
tried to import the OE messages to LiveMail but it keeps saying "the
specified message store could not be opened. It may be in use by Outlook
Express".
The path it picks is correct. What do I need to do next? I'm opening only
LiveMail (not Outlook Express). So don't understand why it should say "may be
in use by OE".
Thanks for your assistance.

Re: how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

Open OE, cleanup(delete anything unnecessary), compact, then click File/Offline, Close OE
Verify that OE's process/exe is not running via Task Manager.
Verify the path to ensure it does not have any duplicate entries.
- in WLM use the browse button rather than allow WLM to find the store.

More info on Importing in OE(see the Live Support included too)

When you select the Outlook Express storage folder make sure you click it only
once, i.e. do not open the folder when you select it.

Thanks for the suggestion Winston. Tried it but the situation is unchanged.

Re: how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

It may help to try the transfer immediately after a reboot, without starting
Outlook Express.

Re: how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

You can use plan B instead.

You can use a double drag-and-drop to move
messages in either direction between WLM and OE. Create an empty
Windows folder. Then in OE select all the messages in a folder, then
drag-and-drop to the Windows folder. Then select all the messages in
the Windows folder and drag-and-drop into an WLM folder of your choice.

Re: how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

Michael,
If you recall, I've used OL for email for years instead of OE.
Does drag and drop from OE to a Windows folder then to WLM retain the To, From date etc ?

Re: how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

Absolutely. That information is all in the EML file, including any
attachments.

What you do lose is the account that sent/received the message and
read/unread status since that's not in the EML file.

There is one exception on the date. If a message was sent via OE from a
mailto link on a web page, for some reason OE never inserts a Date
header in the message. In that case, the message will end up with the
current date/time after move. Messages sent normally from within OE
(new/reply/forward) have the compose date header and will be fine.

Re: how to transfer OutlookExpress mails to Windows LiveMail

Thanks...some info retained, some lost, thus an informed choice has to be made.
