Copy Contacts in Windows Live Mail

Hi,

I'm wanting to copy my contact list with groups intact etc from my notebook
to Desktop computer. I'd prefer to delete contacts from the Desktop first. -
both computers newly have Live Mail newly installed after prev. using
Outlook Express - I'm using Windows XP SP3 on both computers.

Assistance appreciated.

Are you signed-in with a Hotmail-type Live ID? If so, your contacts
are already backed up on the web and all you have to do is sign in
on your desktop with the same Live ID - this is one of the
advantages of signing in. One set of contacts, always in sync on
both machines.

If not, you won't be able to transfer from one WLMail installation
to another and keep your groups. If you have them in your WAB on the
laptop, just copy the WAB to the desktop and import from there into
WLMail.

Re: Copy Contacts in Windows Live Mail

If WLM includes both Live ID accounts and non Live ID accounts(e.g. Pop3 account) and maintains separate Contacts, then
- the Live ID syncs with Hotmail once signed on with a Live ID(contacts are stored online...ie..just logon using that ID in WLM)
- Pop3 accounts if not signed on with a Live ID will use the WLM default contacts

If the latter, it also needs to be exported.
Open WLM(do not sign in) on the old pc with WLM installed.
- if auto-signon is in place(Tools/Options/Connections/Stop signing in)
Click on the Contacts icon(looks like a small open wirebound notebook) or Control Shift C
File/Export/Comma Separated Values
Save to a portable storage device(thumb drive, jump drive, floppy, etc, external drive, drive on network etc)

Open WLM
If the default contacts do not sign on(see above)
Click on the Contacts icon(looks like a small open wirebound notebook) or Control Shift C
File/Import/Comma Separated Values

As Noel mentioned, groups are not importable. And if using the OE wab file(only the default email address will import, any
duplicate entries which OE allows will not)

Re: Copy Contacts in Windows Live Mail

Assuming that you are NOT using any Hotmail/Live e-mail addresses, you
can try the following.

If you haven't moved your WLM storage folder, you will want to go to the
folder

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live
Mail\Contacts\Default

The Default folder will be hidden. You must enable display of hidden
and system files in Windows Explorer, Tools, Options, Folder Options.

With WLM closed on both PCs, delete everything in that folder on the
desktop and copy the entire folder from the laptop.

If you have any problems on the desktop with the contacts after opening
WLM, close WLM and delete the contactcoll.cache file there. Then
restart WLM.

You should see all your contacts and groups.

Thanks for the replies - you have all added to my understanding of how Live
Mail Works. I should be right from here.
