Hiding Messages

In the Views settings, is "hiding" a read message the same as deleting a
message after reading it? If there's a difference, what is it? Thanks.

Re: Hiding Messages

Email or newsgroup messages? One doesn't ordinarily delete
newsgroup messages. Yes, here is a big difference. You can
unhide read messages if you need to see them again, but
you can't undelete messages once they've been deleted from
the Deleted Items folder.

Re: Hiding Messages

Gary...........

Email or newsgroup messages?
Both, if there's a difference between the two.

One doesn't ordinarily delete newsgroup messages.
Why not? I do, after I've read them. I'm surprised by your comment.

Yes, here is a big difference. You can unhide read messages if you need to
see them again, but you can't undelete messages once they've been deleted
from the Deleted Items folder.
So hidden messages continue to exist on my hard drive? And deleting them
removes them from my file structure?

Have you noticed that MS actually makes it take extra effort to delete a
news message? Unlike deleting mail, it always requires answering a prompt.
The right-click menu doesn't even have Delete as an option, although it does
for a mail message. As a frequent responder, I often need to review details
of what happened previously in a thread, before I can write a thoughtful reply.
So deleting right after reading doesn't work for me. There is a compromise
setting that works for many people: Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance,
has an option to automatically purge read news messages after XX days.
