SMTP Server Can't Connect

I have an issue with my email account with Charter. My settings work fine in
outlook and outlook express. I can recieve mail just fine. But when I try to
send from the charter account it does not connect to the server. No error
message, just a dialog saying it's been more than 60 seconds, do I want to
continue trying to connect:

POP: pop.chartermi.net
SMTP: mail.chartermi.net

Password authentication is set to clear text (I've tried the other
combinations to no avail). Anyone else seen this issue? I've contacted
charter, but their support is clueless. Since the settings work in outlook
and outlook express, I assume WLM must be doing something differently when
authenticating to the SMTP server. Any suggestions?

Re: SMTP Server Can't Connect

Where did the "mi" in the server name come from?

According to
http://www.charter.com/customers/sup...ArticleID=1417
the server names should be
Incoming E-Mail Server: pop.charter.net
Outgoing E-Mail Server: smtp.charter.net

Re: SMTP Server Can't Connect

If you click on Cancel, it should then give you more information in
the error message. We would need to see the complete diagnostics
in that error message, such as the port number.

Are you sending from home when it fails, or away from home?

Is your antivirus configured to scan email? Disable that function.

Thanks Gary. After a minute of trying to connect it pops up the dialog that
says:

Your SMTP server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you, like to wait
another 60 seconds for the server to respond?

It displays which account it's trying to connect to and the Server info:
mail.chartermi.net and has a Wait and a Stop button.

Clicking Wait just continues the process for about another minute and repops
the dialog.

Clicking stop brings you back to the connection dailog with the following
error:

A time-out occurred while communicating with the server.

Subject 'Test'
Server: 'mail.chartermi.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC19
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No

Does this help?

Re: SMTP Server Can't Connect

Thanks for including the complete error message.
However, you did not answer two of my questions.
I will need your responses to those questions.

Re: SMTP Server Can't Connect

This happens at home and at work. I'm using McAfee at both locations. I
suspect this is the issue. I just need to figure out what I need to disable.
I wonder why it only affects the Charter account. Hotmail/GMail work fine.

Re: SMTP Server Can't Connect

If you are trying to use the mail.chartermi.net SMTP server at the office,
it is not surprising that it doesn't work. Presumably your office has a different
Internet service provider. For more on why it doesn't work, see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/P..._Blocking.aspx

Hotmail uses HTTP rather than SMTP. Gmail uses a port other than 25,
which is one of the workarounds if the server offers that.

So, the question remains, why doesn't it work at home, where your Internet
service is supplied by the owner of mail.chartermi.net? The only suggestion
I have is to disable McAfee's email scanning. If that doesn't help, do a trial
uninstall of McAfee, followed by using their special removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...107083&lc=1033
You can always reinstall McAfee if it is not the culprit.
