Anti Virus

I wrote a few days ago about WLM occasionally and randomly freezing or
locking up when I click on a file attachment. Further testing has me
wondering if it's possibly connected to my anti virus program. While I can
sometimes go a day or two without a lockup, my latest test might not be
valid BUT it appears not to happen if I disable my anti virus so, I'd like
to try a different program for a few days to see what happens.

I currently use Avast and wonder if any of you also running Vista might clue
me as to what AV program you're using...I know, for example, AVG is highly
rated and I'm assuming it's been updated to run with Vista. Anyway, any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

Both avast! and AVG run well under Vista. However, at least for Windows
Mail, they stop causing interference if you do a custom install and tell it
to leave
out the part that scans email.

I have installed both AVG8 (two Windows Vista computers, one Windows XP
computer, one Windows MCE 2005 computer), and Avast (one Windows MCE 2005
computer). In all cases, I run the "Custom" install, and deselect the email
scanner module, so no email scanning is done. There are no reported problems
with AV by any user.

Re: Anti Virus

I tried Avast for a while but had a few problems similar to yours and the
spinner got on my nerves. Been using AVG8 free with vista for a week now and
it is good.

Re: Anti Virus

Thanks so much. I had disabled scanning on Avast but for some reason, it's
still scanning as I can tell there's activity so I think I'll give avg a
try.

Re: Anti Virus

As was remarked here earlier, with both Avast and AVG you need to
choose custom install, which then allows to to deselect the mail
scanning module.

Re: Anti Virus

Why disable the e-mail scanning module ?
Seems to me that's one of the key points, scan e-mail for viruses.
I've been using it ever since AVG 8.o came out with Vista Home Premium SP1.
Should one rely on Vista defender ?

Re: Anti Virus

Disabling the email scanning module will eliminate some problems that
can occur. If you have a good AV product on your system you are already
protected. A file is a file is a file. The AV program that will stop a
malicious file from executing when it is downloaded onto your system is the
same AV program that will stop it if it is executed from within an email.
Windows Defender is not an AV program. In any event, no AV program will
stop 100% of malicious attacks and to think it will do so will do nothing
but give you a false sense of security. The best way to protect yourself
from attacks is to utilize safe browsing habits and attain the knowledge
necessary to configure your system to guard against such attacks.
Also, if you back up your system on a regular basis you will always be
able to restore it to a point prior to the infection. Don't rely on System
Restore to escape a serious infection as the restore points themselves can
become infected.

Re: Anti Virus

Email scanning is redundant and unnecessary. Even the originator of
the email scanning concept, Symantec, admits so:

Because it causes more problems than it prevents.

No. But try a simple test. Uninstall AVG 8, and reinstall it without the
email scanning module. Send yourself an EICAR test file. Try to manipulate
that file in your email while AVG 8 (without the email scanning module) is
running. If AVG 8 doesn't alert you when you try to just move, or save the
EICAR file, I'd be very surprised.
