| | Limit download size One of my email accounts is dial-up and I would like to limit the size of emails which are downloaded from the server (because of the long download time). I was able to do this with Outlook Express but don't know how to do it with Windows Live Mail. Can anyone help? -- kencl |

| | Re: Limit download size Windows Live Mail (WLM): Tools, Message Rules, Mail Rules, New, Size more than xx KB, Do Not Download (This needs to be at the top of your messages rules with any other rules that have an action of Do Not Download or Delete From Server otherwise a prior rule might trigger a download.) Mail will download just the smaller ones. With OE5+/WLM you won't get any obvious indication that there are messages not being downloaded because of the message rules. If you've just done a Send and Receive and then immediately do another one, you'll briefly get a display of "Receiving List of Messages" but nothing will download if all the messages are getting skipped. If there are no messages still on the server, you won't see the "Receiving List of Messages" at all. If desired, you can later increase or remove the limit to download them. (Or change the action to Delete From Server it you are sure that you don't want them.) You should eventually delete them from the server if you decide you don't want them. Otherwise your server mail box will eventually reach its limit (set by your ISP). With many ISPs offer a web mail interface to look at your server mail box to decide if you want the messages and, if desired, delete them without downloading. Or you may be able to use Telnet if they don't offer a web mail interface. You can find these Telnet instructions at http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...pop3telnet.htm Or you might also be able to use http://mail2web.com or http://www.mailstart.com for this function (if your ISP allows outside access to their POP3 mail server). Or there are some shareware programs that let you look at messages on the server. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "kencl" <kencl@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:444AB50A-6CAC-4DDE-95C2-294E1C740BDB@xxxxxx Quote: > One of my email accounts is dial-up and I would like to limit the size > of > emails which are downloaded from the server (because of the long > download > time). | | Re: Limit download size You can have more than one criterion in your rule: "Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the message is from the *specified* account *and* Where the message size is more than *size*" etc. How do you manage to have one of your accounts dial-up, but not the other? | | Re: Limit download size OE5+ and WLM behave exactly the same in this regard. If you were using Office Outlook that is another matter. I am curious about one thing. You say: "One of my email accounts is dial-up and I would like to limit the size of emails which are downloaded from the server (because of the long download time)." E-mail accounts aren't dial-up, ISPs are. I assume that you mean that one of your ISPs is dial-up and one or more others are broadband connections. If you have a broadband connection, you almost certainly can download the mail from that dial-up account via your broadband connection. Although possible, it's extremely rare for an ISP to require that you connect to the Internet via them in order download mail. Sending is another matter with restrictions common, but some workarounds often available. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "kencl" <kencl@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:B5C49AE2-3EBC-4769-BD23-8F8608B10BB0@xxxxxx Quote: > > -- When I did this before I was using Outlook or Outlook Expr. and > when a > large message arrived at the server I received a notice and asked if I > wanted > to download it. | | Re: Limit download size You are right. I have a wideband ISP at home and a dial up at another location where wideband is not available. When I'm home of course there is not a problem, I can download mail from both accounts. When I'm at the dial-up location however it is a real nuisance if someone sends me a very big file. It can tie up the computer for an hour. If I leave it on the server I can download it later when I'm home. By the way, is there some way I can cancel the download process once one of these large files starts, without it starting all over again or continuing the next time I try to get mail? -- kencl "Michael Santovec" wrote: Quote: > OE5+ and WLM behave exactly the same in this regard. | | Re: Limit download size It was pointed out to me that I'm using the term "account" incorrectly. I have a wideband ISP at one location and a dial-up at another. I'm using the same computer at both locations (a laptop) and I retrieve mail from both servers at both locations, so I do want the file size limitation to apply to both accounts. What I really need is notification from the server that a large file has not been downloaded so that I can download it later at the wideband location. I had this capability once. It must have been when I was using Outlook as my email program, since I'm assured that neither OE or WLV offer the option. kencl "Ildhund" wrote: Quote: > You can have more than one criterion in your rule: > "Apply this rule after the message arrives > Where the message is from the *specified* account > *and* Where the message size is more than *size*" > etc. > > How do you manage to have one of your accounts dial-up, but not the > other?
